We've got a special segment with Nilay Patel and David Amuel talking about running local LLMs on your Mac, and then the thunder round returns.

But first, we're starting things off with Allison Johnson, who is here joining us from California, where she has just been at Apple's event.

Allison, so glad you're here.

The other week, Apple announced some new Macs, and they went all out marketing them as AI powerhouses, which we thought was probably just some marketing bluster.

And some listeners told us maybe it's not.

So Nilay Patel and David Amezcua called up an AI researcher to break down what's real and what's hype.

[swoosh] So like a week ago, we did the Vergecast, and we were talking about the new Mac Studios, and in the way that we are oft want to do, we dismissed Apple's marketing as out of hand.

Like the iPhone air is amazing.

Um, not being able to shoot pro raw when you want to like that's tough like not being able to do like the like i use the 8x more than i should on this on this iphone pro like and you're not going to be able to get that quality on the duo and so also i don't want to stand there with this little chunky thing to take pictures that just feels weird

and there was this was mentioned uh neil i mentioned on the verge cast first but like concerts people holding up their phone to capture video of concerts the iphone duo is going to be just insufferable this seven inch screen everyone's gonna be holding up an ipad basically to capture not

i mean again there will i just don't think there's gonna be that many of them in the wild i could be wrong i think it's gonna be great two thousand bucks is a lot though for a phone

And I think we've got a lot to talk about when it comes to Ternus, but, uh, actually, we got some breaking news right at the top of the podcast, which is that editor-in-chief Nilay Patel is also about to join us.

He's there in person in Cupertino, and he has had s- a chance to look at the iPhone Duo in person and give us a little bit of, uh, some impressions on what that is like.

So, um, he's still getting set up, but I'm very excited.

That is a small category of smartphone.

And so take that, throw in the fact that it's Android, and you can see the why many app developers have basically said, "It is not worth my time to mess around with my code and figure out how to make my app work on the 1% of phones that might run it." But Apple comes in and everyone's gonna jump.

Tom and I have known each other for a long time.

I mean, a lot of media companies are trying to figure out now what happens after, uh, uh...

Nilay Patel at The Verge has this term for it, Google Zero, right? When Google traffic goes down to zero, like, what happens to publishers, you know, media companies? A lot of people are trying to figure out what that is.

But I, I think it's, it's going to be v- very interesting because if people don't create that content, create that stuff from which it can draw on, and the only thing that's happening are these large language models are generating all kinds of synthetic text and doing whatever, and it trains off that, you get this, like, recursive problem where basically it's like, it's almost like, like, large language model, like, inbreeding, right? Where, like, the knowledge just gets warped by the fact that it's, like, a computer talking to a computer synthesizing what a computer said.
