Michael RandHOST
That is a exhibition game against Omaha at the Barn.
Michael RandHOST
Curious to see what the next s- the next incarnation, year two under Niko Medved looks like.
Michael RandHOST
They made some definite progress last season.
Michael RandHOST
Kinda highly regarded this season.
Brandon JadichHOST
I know he was horrible at, at North Carolina a couple years ago.
Brandon JadichHOST
He went to Minnesota last year with, uh, you know, a Niko Medved.
Brandon JadichHOST
He fits so much better in Medved's system, and it worked great.
Brandon JadichHOST
He averaged 20 a game last year.
Brandon JadichHOST
If you get those two together, plus Kyan Evans, I know it didn't work out great once again at North Carolina.
Brandon JadichHOST
Seems to be a common theme for, uh, you know, Hubert, under Hubert Davis unfortunately.
Brandon JadichHOST
Um, getting him back in Niko Medved's system.
Brandon JadichHOST
He was formerly at Colorado State on the team that, you know, was a 12 seed, won a game in the NCAA tournament, almost made the Sweet 16 if it wasn't for a Derek Queen buzzer beater for Maryland, who we're gonna talk about here in a second.
RodHOST
And then the other one would be Minnesota.
RodHOST
Uh, Minnesota does not have an overwhelmingly impressive roster, but I think the job Niko Medved did last year was phenomenal, 'cause he had nothing to work with.
EricHOST
[laughs]
RodHOST
And they were competitive.
Greg PetersonHOST
Give me stock on the state with the smallest drinks in the union, Minnesota.
Greg PetersonHOST
Niko Medved, in my opinion, one of the better coaches in all of college basketball.
Greg PetersonHOST
Now they've got Kyan Evans back after he didn't see a lot of run over at North Carolina last year, but two years ago in the same system was good.
Greg PetersonHOST
Jalen Crocker-Johnson, after he was banged up last year, he's back and fully healthy.
Greg PetersonHOST
I'm very stocked up on Minnesota, who at the barn is one of the most lethal teams that might not be a top 20, top 25 team, but they always pick you off at home.
Rob DonaldsonGUEST
Yeah, and, and as somebody who obviously is an Iowa fan, and I would love for nothing but Minnesota to struggle for the rest of their life in every single sport.
Rob DonaldsonGUEST
Admittedly, Niko Medved is one of my [laughs] favorite coaches in all the sport of college basketball, because my goodness, man, how can you not look at what he did at Colorado State? And he literally just coached his butt off to bring some of those rosters not only into relevance, you know, j- not just the 20 wins in a season, but to, and multiple, three different NCAA tournaments where some of those teams had no business even sniffing, you know, top five in the Mountain West some of those years.
Rob DonaldsonGUEST
So yeah, Niko Medved is by far one of the best head coaches in all of the sport.
Steve HartmanHOST
Next week, the 23rd, they'll be in Creighton for a good test for the program.
Steve HartmanHOST
Uh, so today we're gonna talk about who the players are, what they're bringing to the table, how they're gonna fit in under second-year coach Niko Medved.
Steve HartmanHOST
There's a lot of excitement, uh, for the Gophers on both the men's and women's side.
Steve HartmanHOST
I shared out on socials this week about how Minnesota was ranked 42nd in KenPom to start the year.
Steve HartmanHOST
So with that, let's get into it.
Steve HartmanHOST
[drum beat] All right.
Steve HartmanHOST
Overall, Niko Medved has a squad that's kind of a mixed bag.
Steve HartmanHOST
They have a lot of returners from last year's team.
Mike GrimmHOST
The Golden Gopher men's basketball team opens its exhibition season on Thursday night at home at the Barn against Omaha.
Mike GrimmHOST
Head coach Niko Medved says he's learned a lot about his team during the summer and the fall, but the real learning starts now.
Niko MedvedSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
As we get into this season, every year you gotta start playing games, and you get told the truth, right?
Mike GrimmHOST
Yeah.
Mike GrimmHOST
Yeah
Niko MedvedSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
... generally in the right direction.
Mike GrimmHOST
That's Gopher head coach Niko Medved, and that's the Golden Gopher Daily Update.
Mike GrimmHOST
I'm Mike Grimm.
Andy PattonHOST
After he committed in November, there was a coaching change in March, uh, where Coach Ben Johnson was let go.
Andy PattonHOST
They bring in Niko Medved from Colorado State, and at that point, Jefferson ended up decommitting because he was attached to Coach Johnson, reopened his recruitment.
Andy PattonHOST
This happened in May of 2025, and Gonzaga swooped in.
Andy PattonHOST
Actually, I think he decommitted in March, uh, and Gonzaga landed him May 2nd, was when he made his announcement that he is committing to Gonzaga.
Eric NordquistHOST
