Nikko

The congregation of the globe-trotters are in the hotel, scuffling for guides, in order that they may be shown the sights of Japan, which is all one sight.

They must go to Tokio; they must go to Nikko; they must surely see all that is to be seen, and then write home to their barbarian families that they are getting used to the sight of bare brown legs.

Before this day is ended they will all, thank goodness, have splitting headaches and burnt-out eyes.

It is better to lie still and hear the grass grow, to soak in the heat and the smell and the sounds and the sights that come unasked.

I was looking at a map of Tokyo.

I went to Nikko very briefly, enjoyed some hiking there.

Nikko, a place that regardless of how I pronounce it, it gets the same reaction from Japanese people.

Sometimes I say it like that, but I quite enjoy the interaction.

So I usually go, I've been to Nikko yesterday and just to see what happens every time.

But we were on a pleasure trip, and in order thoroughly to enjoy yourself, private inclination must frequently be sacrificed.

We were bound for Nikko, taking the first stage of the journey by train, and the station was about as far off as it could possibly get and still be in Tokyo.

We were in the gin-ricoches by a quarter-past six, and the train started at seven.

But Ito, our guide, was already fearful that we should miss the train.

At that date a child is one year old, whether born the previous January, at midsummer, or on the 31st of December.

Ito made an excellent omelette, which with a dish of cold tongue and a cup of cocoa completed a luxurious luncheon.

After an hour's rest we were off again, and presently reached the Rehei Shikaido, the road which used to be followed by the envoy of the Mikado in his annual pilgrimage to the tomb of the first shogun at Nikko.

This road, one of the great highways of Japan, is in a condition almost as bad as the road leading citywards from the steamboat wharf at New York.

Four railway workers died on August twentieth after being struck by a Spacia X limited express train while clearing vegetation near Shin-Kanuma Station on the Tobu Nikko Line in Tochigi Prefecture.

At around ten forty-five AM, a caller reported that workers had been hit by a train at the station in Kanuma.

According to Tochigi Prefectural Police and the Kanuma Fire Department, the four workers were taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

No passengers or crew members were injured.

The victims were employees of contractors working for Tobu Railway Company.

According to Tobu Railway, the train involved was a Spacia X running from Tobu Nikko Station in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, to Asakusa Station in Tokyo's Taito Ward.

It was preparing to stop at Shin-Kanuma Station when the accident occurred.
