Nightwood

Um, my problem is that all of the, uh, openings that really, really punched me in the face and grabbed me are ones that are breaking every rule, you know? And, like, in that thing of, like, yes, you wanna learn from the r- the masters, but you don't wanna try to make a Rembrandt first, you know? Uh, Gideon the Ninth opening is incredible.

It is absolute and utter nonsense for the first, like, three chapters, until you're like, "Oh, wait, I've been in it for a, a second, and I, I don't understand how I've gotten here." Uh, one of my favorite openings is Juno Barnes' Night Wood.

It takes about, it's one sentence that goes for about five pages.

It is the character's entire backstory, how her parents met, how they fell in love, how they, what weird jobs they had in, like, Austria in the '20s, how they died when she was born.
