That was...
G
62:17Gerald WW LynnHOST
Listeners, have you ever been accused of killing the king, who's also your nephew? Then you are forced to stand trial with your father as the main judge, so your brother cuts a deal where you plead guilty and have to go live the rest of your life as a member of the Night's Watch? No.
G
62:33Gerald WW LynnHOST
I hope not.
G
62:34Gerald WW LynnHOST
Probably not anyway, as that is taken out of the pages of Games of Thrones.
G
62:58Gerald WW LynnHOST
DFV, how did the cookie crumble?
D

House Of The Dragon: How Every Main Character Dies In The Books
S
24:02speaker_3HOST
Cregan Stark, adhering to the old ways, offers Larys a stark choice.
S
24:06speaker_3HOST
He can take the black, meaning he forfeits all titles and heads north to serve in the Night's Watch at the Wall for the rest of his life, or he can face immediate execution
S
24:15speaker_2HOST
And remarkably, Larys chooses execution A man who has spent his entire life squirming out of consequences finally chooses to just lay his head on the block.
S
24:23speaker_3HOST
It's surprising, isn't it?
S
26:19speaker_2HOST
It is massive.
S
26:20speaker_3HOST
Huge.
S
26:21speaker_2HOST
It's the exact same sword that Ned Stark wields in the very first episode of Game of Thrones to execute the Night's Watch deserter.
S
26:28speaker_2HOST
Tragically, it's the same sword later used by Ilyn Payne to execute Ned Stark himself.
Winter is Coming & Some Stark Commentary | A Song of Spice and Rhani | Bonus Episode!
R
2:09RonnieHOST
Okay, so we are at the wall, and the gate is opening.
R
2:12RonnieHOST
We have our three men of the Night's Watch heading out into the woods for scary, spooky shit.
R
2:20RonnieHOST
Now, I'm going to start off by saying, at the very beginning of this episode, that I do think that this is a... a very good episode of television and despite what is sure to be some nitpicking here and there i do think that this episode hooked me very very easily upon my first watch um and this was uh prior to me ever reading the books, because I don't know who knows this about me or not, but I watched the show in its entirety as it was coming out without ever having read anything, and then it wasn't until, like, three, four years later that I decided to read the series, and then, you know, got angry for a whole new set of reasons.
R
3:00RonnieHOST
But anyway, but yeah, so this is a really interesting kind of episode to revisit with that in mind, because obviously the first time that I watched this episode, it did a really good job of hooking me.
R
5:22RonnieHOST
Anyway, back to the point I was making.
R
5:26RonnieHOST
Here's kind of where we're seeing the spot where the show version and the book version kind of deviate from one another.
R
5:35RonnieHOST
You have the three men of the Night's Watch talking.
R
5:38RonnieHOST
Waymar is being the asshat.
651: ADwD Jon IX
C
10:13ChikiHOST
That's an interesting little thought for him to have.
C
10:17ChikiHOST
Um, but also obviously John wants to borrow some money to basically keep the night's watch fed.
C
10:24ChikiHOST
And I love how he has no idea how they're going to pay back
K
10:28KamaPANELIST
this loan that they're getting
13 MINS LATER
K
23:23KamaPANELIST
So
C
23:24ChikiHOST
anyway, we get to the end and she basically begs him for his... protection.
C
23:36ChikiHOST
Because, and she does this not because he is the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, but because he is Ed Stark's son, which is very interesting and probably in many ways important of what is to come toward the end of this book.
C
23:53ChikiHOST
So what do we think about Jon's state of mind here? Because there's something refreshing in this in that there's a little less doom shadowing on it than a lot of his previous chapters.

What if Tywin Lannister Became King, NOT Robert Baratheon
S
8:01speaker_0NARRATOR
He leaves the day-to-day operations of the Iron Islands to one of his uncles, while Theon is taken to the capital to be raised by Tywin.
S
8:09speaker_0NARRATOR
However, he does not forget the North's insolence and decides to hit back through the Night's Watch.
S
8:15speaker_0NARRATOR
Although this order is theoretically in charge of the protection of the Seven Kingdoms, in truth, it is the North most affected by it.
S
8:22speaker_0NARRATOR
So Tywin decides to reduce the number of recruits allowed to join the order by limiting the recruitment opportunities of wandering crows.
S
8:30speaker_0NARRATOR
Soon, the number of Night's Watch begin to decline, while wildling raids increase.
S
8:34speaker_0NARRATOR
This forces the North to commit more forces to defending the Wall.
S
8:38speaker_0NARRATOR
Although Tywin hopes it will turn them against Ned, it only further alienates the North, who can smell Tywin's disdain for them behind this scheme.
S
8:46speaker_0NARRATOR
This does lead to increased wildling raids, as the Night's Watch numbers dwindle and they cross in greater numbers.
What if Ned Stark SURVIVED
S
0:57speaker_0NARRATOR
Joffrey, looking down on Ned with a gleam of satisfaction, draws a breath to speak when a voice cuts through the crowd.
S
1:05speaker_0NARRATOR
As promised, he will allow Ned to take the Black and spend the rest of his life in the Night's Watch.
S
1:10speaker_0NARRATOR
I'll take him.
S
1:12speaker_0NARRATOR
I'm Yoren of the Night's Watch, a wandering crow in search for recruits.
S
1:17speaker_0NARRATOR
It seems I have one more.
S
1:19speaker_0NARRATOR
The crowd stirs as the man steps forward.
S
1:22speaker_0NARRATOR
Although stoop-shouldered and haggard, the worn black cloak of the Night's Watch caught the light and forced the crowd to part.
S
1:29speaker_0NARRATOR
He takes Ned roughly and guides him away from the crowd.
What if Jon Snow Looked Like a Targaryen
S
5:22speaker_2HOST
Catelyn isn't the only source of compassion for Jaehaerys either.
S
5:25speaker_2HOST
As news reaches the wall of this silver-haired youth, it catches the attention of another Stark, Benjen of the Night's Watch.
S
5:32speaker_2HOST
Maester Aemon takes the first ranger to meet the boy to verify the rumors and to see what sort of man he is.
S
5:39speaker_2HOST
Over the years, Benjen occasionally appears in Winterfell to visit Ned and his children, but also to observe Jaehaerys.
S
7:14speaker_4VOICE_ACTOR
What shall matter is how well he serves, and I am certain Jaehaerys shall rise high.
S
7:19speaker_2HOST
Ned considers this offer, but in the end leaves the decision to Jaehaerys.
S
7:24speaker_2HOST
For the young Targaryen, while he is immensely grateful to the Starks for giving him a place in Winterfell, while he is immensely grateful to the Starks for giving a place in Winterfell, he sees the Night's Watch as a place for him to rise beyond simply being the Targaryen bastard.
S
7:38speaker_2HOST
He sees himself rising within their ranks, becoming a ranger, and then something more like his uncle Benjen.
