TimHOST

They remade the famous painting.
TimHOST
37:17
It's Edward Hopper's Nighthawks.
DeanHOST
37:19
Yes, of course.
DeanHOST
37:20
They
Katie DozierHOST
27:36
Yeah.
Katie DozierHOST
27:36
I would argue that there's still like, first of all, I don't know that save the cat applies to, to paintings in general, but I would say with Nighthawks, there actually is a bit of save the cat going on because you know, the person is out late by themselves and they're trying, like they're trying to exist in the world and it's late and they're lonely and probably hungry.
Katie DozierHOST
27:56
So I would say that, but that, that ties into this poem even more.
Katie DozierHOST
28:00
I think with that, I just think it's, you know, I'm defensive of the Save the Cat thing because I think we have a huge problem in contemporary poetry of poems presuming interest.
Matt MiraHOST
85:03
Every night, you're in that diner with that lady who won't talk to you.
Matt MiraHOST
85:06
It's the Nighthawks painting.
Andrew SecundaHOST
85:07
[laughs]
Matt MiraHOST
85:07
I know you.
Andrew SecundaHOST
85:08
The Nighthawks painting is how I emotionally feel about my life.
Andrew SecundaHOST
85:11
[laughs]
Matt MiraHOST
85:13
That's my desktop on this monitor-

Yesterday, to continue the theme-
Emily WilsonHOST

Donna ended up at Compton's Cafeteria at Turk and Taylor.
Emily WilsonHOST
9:02
It reminded her of the famous Edward Hopper painting of a diner, Nighthawks.
Donna PersonnaGUEST
9:07
I sat with these beautiful ladies.
Donna PersonnaGUEST
9:11
They were gorgeous.
TheoHOST
21:07
We look at that.
TheoHOST
21:07
You know, what's that painting of the diner? And it's like Nighthawks.
TheoHOST
21:11
Nighthawks.
TheoHOST
21:13
Beautiful, but we can't see beauty in our own lives.
TheoHOST
21:17
I am seeing the beauty.
TheoHOST
21:18
I'm
LucyHOST
21:19
seeing Nighthawks at the Milton KFC.
AndrewHOST
21:22
It sounds to me, Lucy, like you have discovered at this KFC the spirit of the urinal.
Blake CrouchHOST
11:54
You had written this scene where they're standing in front of a painting, and they kept pushing us.
Blake CrouchHOST
11:58
They, they kept saying, "Use Nighthawks." And you didn't wanna use Nighthawks for some reason.
Jacquelyn Ben-ZekryHOST
12:02
I just didn't have anything to say about it.
Jacquelyn Ben-ZekryHOST
12:03
It wasn't like-
Blake CrouchHOST
12:21
No, no, that's a different one.
Jacquelyn Ben-ZekryHOST
12:22
Okay.
Blake CrouchHOST
12:22
But then they walk into this town, and they see this diner that's exactly the Nighthawks Diner.
Jacquelyn Ben-ZekryHOST
12:26
Mm-hmm.
TomHOST
30:45
No, no diner entrance or door.
TomHOST
30:47
But yeah, this is a famous painting called Nighthawks by Edward Hopper.
TomHOST
30:51
So it's kind of cool to see this painting kind of get featured and then tie it into the grander story of dark matter.
TomHOST
30:58
I thought was pretty cool.
JulianHOST
31:16
I love most of his other work, which I'll name at a different time and date.
TomHOST
31:20
I was going to ask.
TomHOST
31:21
This one's called Nighthawks.
TomHOST
31:22
Yeah, do you know of any of his others?
Sarah Urist-GreenHOST
4:47
In fact, most work is allowed to be reused in parody or commentary or for scholarly purposes, something that in the U.S. we call fair use.
Sarah Urist-GreenHOST
4:57
Like take this famous 1942 painting Nighthawks by American artist Edward Hopper.
Sarah Urist-GreenHOST
5:02
It's been parodied and memed tons of times.
Sarah Urist-GreenHOST
5:05
We know these aren't the real Nighthawks.
Sarah Urist-GreenHOST
5:08
The differences are stark enough that we don't confuse it with the original.
Sarah Urist-GreenHOST
5:12
But also because the original has been vetted, verified, and authenticated as a work by Hopper.
Andrew TischlerHOST
15:11
Mm.
Joe PaquetGUEST
15:12
Right? Because the reason Hopper's work, like Nighthawks-
Andrew TischlerHOST
15:15
Mm
Joe PaquetGUEST
15:16
... is so powerful, because he's got the perfect balance of optical truths with subjective choice making.
JeanHOST
6:24
That's right.
JeanHOST
6:25
I mean, I know, what is it, Nighthawks? Nighthawks, yes.
JeanHOST
6:28
That's the only one of his paintings I know, but I guess there was a second one, Portrait of Orleans.
JeanHOST
6:33
Oh, he
