They actually had a lot of pressure on this album, so following all that pressure and exhaustion from touring for their 1997 breakthrough album, OK Computer, itself another one of their masterpieces, frontman Tom York underwent a crisis of sorts, creatively at least.

The band completely overhauled their musical direction, so under the guidance of longtime producer Nigel Godrich, They largely abandoned their traditional guitar-driven alternative rock and went with a more experimental electronic sound on this one.

26:33
They drew inspiration from 1970s kraut rock, avant-garde jazz, and also 20th century classical music.

They incorporated synthesizers and drum machines and also brass sections into this one.

I mean, there's all sorts of slightly trite philosophical things you could say, but things do pass and move on and whether you're... either in life I mean obviously you know grief is a massive thing but it does move on work wise you know you might have a massive success or you might have a massive you know failure stroke problem but it does move on and it does you know every producer has lost a client every producer has had a you know a mix that hasn't gone as well or a project that hasn't turned out how they'd like or a relationship that's gone sour.
Adrian BreakspearGUEST
46:38
So if you think about maybe accepting Nigel Godrich and Radiohead or George Martin and the Beatles, but if you think about all those big successful bands, they've all made records with multiple producers and sometimes they've come back to produce.
Adrian BreakspearGUEST
46:49
I mean, use Mike Crossy as an example.
Adrian BreakspearGUEST
46:51
He did the first Arctic Monkeys album or the first kind of EPs and stuff.
Ed ChenHOST
14:40
not a bad thing.
Ed ChenHOST
14:41
It's not a copy of OK Computer, but with Nigel Godrich in there, you almost expect that.
Ed ChenHOST
14:47
Although the Paul stuff is nothing like OK Computer.
Martin QuibellHOST
14:50
No.
DLHOST
25:15
An album about, like, modern life making human expression fucking inadequate.
DLHOST
25:20
It's using its instruments in a way that... enact i don't know inadequacy this is this is the form and the content being the same thing this is the standard okay computer meets it at the highest level nothing before it nothing after it has done it as well and i think a lot of that is because of the production because nigel godrich was 22 years old when he did this he made the decisions about how the guitar textures were gonna work here OK, he made the decisions of how the vocals were going to sit the mix or how the like elements of of the orchestra were going to integrate with the with the fucking rock elements.
DLHOST
26:01
You know, he was fucking 22 and he made a record that defined what a serious rock album should sound like for two decades.
DLHOST
26:11
Yeah.
DLHOST
26:12
When you're evaluating OK Computer as the best album in the catalog, on the best list, you have to name Nigel Godrich.
DLHOST
26:19
And the achievement, sure, the musical achievement is all York and Greenwood.
DLHOST
26:26
But the sonic achievement is Godrich.
Karl BrueggemannHOST
47:50
yeah i know it's super fun and i know that nagamatsu is listed as a performer on this track so i can only imagine that's nagamatsu singing there um as well as i think they composed it together if i'm not mistaken but
Will BrueggemannHOST
48:01
Yeah, that feels like Nigel Godrich approved that particular track.
Will BrueggemannHOST
48:07
Yeah, so it's
Karl BrueggemannHOST
48:07
like as this playlist is going on, I definitely feel like someone who listens to this playlist gets the sense, gets the vibe of this score, even if I think like everything we're hearing is representative.

It was wrought from heartbreak.
John MeagherGUEST

And interestingly, a lot of the musicians who played on that and the Morning Phase album have returned for this particular album, along with Nigel Godric, who, of course, is, I suppose, very well known for a quintet from Oxford, shall we say, Radiohead.
John MeagherGUEST

And...
John MeagherGUEST

Yeah, this is very much an album that sees Beck returning, not to his roots, but maybe to a mid-period.
AndrewHOST

Beck produced the album.
AndrewHOST
4:27
It was mixed by Nigel Godrich, our Radiohead producer friend.
AndrewHOST
4:31
And it's the first studio album since 2019 of his, marking his longest gap between studio albums in his career.
AndrewHOST
4:37
It was released again last Friday, the 18th of September.
Randy AllainHOST
15:42
Uh, but yeah, he gets in the studio, brings that team together.
Randy AllainHOST
15:45
Though absent Nigel Godrich, who's been a longtime collaborator.
Randy AllainHOST
15:49
That's the only key member of the creative team who's not there this time around.
Randy AllainHOST
15:54
In addition to just, like, working, reworking songs, trying things out, the strings are even more front and center than they've ever been.
William HannHOST

Amnesiac is the 2001 album from Oxford rock band Radiohead, and is a continuation of the sonic left turn taken with their previous album, Kid A.
William HannHOST
20:29
Released just seven months apart, Amnesiac saw the band push their newfound experimental sounds even further with the help of now long-term collaborator Nigel Godrich.
William HannHOST
20:40
I only realized earlier, Ni- Godrich is a really cool name, isn't it?
Joe NewmanGUEST
20:42
Yeah, it's-

So when they first started writing, um, it, I think it was Everything In Its Right Place was the first thing they did.
William HannHOST
29:52
Right.
Joe NewmanGUEST
29:53
And when I say they, I mean Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich.
William HannHOST
29:56
Mm.
Steven HydenGUEST
21:36
And he's the guy that they stuck with once they started getting more success, even though they did dabble with other producers.
Steven HydenGUEST
21:43
You know, Nigel Godrich, they famously worked with on Room on Fire.
Simon CardwellHOST
21:48
That didn't go too well with Nigel Godrich, I don't think.
Steven HydenGUEST
21:50
No, and it's a really odd pairing, too.
Steven HydenGUEST
21:53
It is, yeah, yeah.
