Newbury

The problem is we have a very old-fashioned economics game at play here, which is supply and demand.

So the supply side has grown fast, and I wanna go back to the time when I opened my first salon in Newbury, in Berkshire in 1873 or whatever it was.

And this idea develops among some of the people of the time who are coming up with the wilder conspiracy theories that not only is Rupert a witch, but actually the dog is a witch's familiar or is some kind of witch himself.

So I tell the story fairly early on in the book about a battle at Newbury in Berkshire in southern England.

A woman is accused and shot by the parliamentary forces there but then they also start spreading this rumour that the Royalist commander, Rupert, is a witch and the dog is a familiar and he's also something to do with the woman who's been shot as well.

So they come up with this bizarre complex of ideas which links the Cavaliers, you know, the Royalists, their animals, particularly dogs, and female witches.

aware that the A34, the three and a half miles between Tot Hill and Newbury, is the only single carriageway between the south of Spain and Scotland.

And if you sent them a letter, it would arrive.

You know, a letter addressed to Jane Smith at Green Gate, Greenham Common, Newbury, Berkshire, it would get there.

And so they took the case to court, and it was found that, yes, they, they had the right to vote.
