Silver is at just over $65.50 an ounce and up $2.50. And all prices have eased 50 cents to $102 a barrel in the US, while the international print price has little changed at $104.50 a barrel.

And the Kiwi dollar is down 30 basis points from yesterday, now at 57.3 US cents.

Against the Aussie we're down 20 basis points at 80.6 Australian cents.

Against the Euro we're unchanged to 49.9 Euro cents.

Depending on

the exchange rate, we just want a dollar NZD in that account.

But actually, oil prices are sort of connected to everything else in the financial markets.

And although oil prices have surged higher again overnight, that could actually eventually lead to higher interest rates in New Zealand, as well as a lower Kiwi dollar.

Now, we spoke to Westpac's head of strategy, Imre Svica, about how all of these pieces actually all fit together.

You've got the war in the Middle East, of course, and that's pushed oil up to a multi-month high.

We do think that we are going to see continuing improvement over the next few quarters and into next year.

That's something I think the market's going to be jumping on.

If they see no evidence of this or no strong evidence of this economic recovery, you could well see more Kiwi dollar selling in the near term.

And just to top this all off, Imre Spitzer says that for every 10 basis point increase in the short-term US bond yield, so call it, say, the two-year bonds, that can actually translate to a five basis point move higher in New Zealand rates.
