New York International Auto Show

[laughs] So he wanted this car to be, um, debuted at the, uh, '62 New York International Auto Show.

And-

Why wouldn't he?

It was probably 10 or 15 years ago.

It was probably at the Detroit Auto Show or New York Auto Show.

That was

Locomotors.

I can't even remember the last time I saw you.

Probably was at the New York Auto Show.

Does that sound familiar? Very familiar.

We've had some fun times at the New York Auto Show.

Audra and I, I want to say it was the first time I was ever at the New York Auto Show as a working journalist, and that's where we met.

And that has to have been 13 years ago, Audra.

Does that sound right? It does, and time flies when you're having fun, for sure.

Well, I guess we could we could always work backwards from, you know, but I do want to kind of go back in time to give, you know, put your put your spin around just what an iconic part of the car industry that the Charger and Challenger have been.

But I do want to tell you, and Ryan knows this, because at the New York Auto Show when we were up there in April, you know, my better half, my wife and I, we always play a little game after walking around where we go, all right, you got to pick your three cars that you just like to look at.

And we write our little names down, you know, all the different cars.

And the two-door Charger we both had on our list because it's absolutely gorgeous car.

gas yeah so uh really it was henry ford and the model t that um made the um made the gas engine work in the model t and and he was the leader in that and everybody followed and he wasn't necessarily the first but he was he was um basically um um he was a leader there's no doubt about that Ransom Olds over in Lansing, Michigan, was a leader even ahead of Henry Ford and produced the Curve Dash Oldsmobile eight years before the Model T.

He took it to the New York Auto Show, not the first one, but the second one.

And it was gasoline-powered, too.

But we only had steam-powered and battery electric, so the industry is kind of coming full circle.

You know, with all due respect to one of our beloved colleagues, Jack Walsworth, who followed me into the Volkswagen beat, let me just say I went back and looked at stories that I did in 2018 and 2019 about VW considering opening, you know, putting pickups in its lineups.

Now this is pre-Scout and what they showed in those years were two concepts at the New York Auto Show in successive years with successive CEOs, I might add.

One was a Atlas-based Ridgeline-like unibody pickup concept.

And the second one was kind of Tiguan-based.

It says rumblings about the GM reviving the Jimmy gets loudest whenever a new body on SUV frame makes an appearance.

So, this kind of, like, people are talking about this because the debut of the new Hyundai Boulder concept at the 2026 New York Auto Show this year.

While rumors ...

What makes rumors different this time is we're hearing similarly positivity from insiders regarding the Jimmy's return.

Yeah, I agree.

And, uh, you know, they even, uh, they even, since it is an all-wheel vehicle, they even showed at the New York Auto Show a concept where it, it was more of a ruggedized minivan, raised up-

Yeah

... a little bit.

And, yes, I remember the CVS studios.

For many years ago, I'd come in for the New York Auto Show and stop in and see you guys and do a segment with you.

And it's funny.

You're talking about this is the Labor Day thing.

Rolls-Royce has, you know, every single manufacturer has a presence there because it's become the place where you now introduce new models or meet with your clients, where it used to be a...

You know, maybe the New York Auto Show, the Detroit Auto Show, San Francisco Auto Show.

They've declined in their stature so much.

But Pebble Beach has taken up the slack.
