In our own backyard, the silenced surrounding impacts of the old Tonawanda Coke development is most unfortunate.

On the surface, water that used to cool the old Huntley plant is still permitted and significant, but how does it match with what is needed at the proposed data center? Speaking of the old Huntley plant, the New York Independent System Operator, or NYISO, has issued warnings on the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, now seven years into implementation, with renewable energy development falling further behind power demands and high-density coal-powered imports from Pennsylvania filling parts of that void.

Might it make sense to take advantage of the valuable substation adjacent to the plant to put natural gas power generation, half the carbon emission of coal, onto the grid that at least matches the power to be used at the data center? Agreements to curtail power use during peak demand would help address the NYISO power supply worries, as the CLCPA objectives meet costs and reliability realities.

The Tonawanda River Road industrial area is also in the middle of it.

The legislated and codified Niagara River Greenway corridor created simultaneous simultaneous to the Relicensing and 2006 Settlement Agreement for the Niagara Power Project.

As of April 2026, NYSO has not completed any of the three required studies for this proposed project.

Meanwhile, literally, there have been no studies initiated nor completed to back up the claims that they made about the trajectory of this data center in our community.
