In fact, it might almost be the other way around.

It would be fair to say that it was The Damned who first put Stiff Records on the map with New Rose, released in October 1976.

It was the very first punk single, released five weeks before the Sex Pistols' Anarchy in the UK and five months before the debut single from The Clash, White Riot.

The Damned's first album, released by Stiff in February 1977, also beat every other punk band to the punch.

Drugs played their part, of course, but he left behind one key work.

With his new band, the Voidoids, he recorded a classic album, Love Comes in Spurts.

But Stiff Records, yes, them again, got in there first, licensing three early tracks for an EP that was their next release after The Damned's New Rose.

The A-side was an early version of the track with which we're going to close the show.

Today we trace how a handful of single releases from New Rose through Blitzkrieg turned cheap vinyl into a worldwide movement and changed punk forever.

Now let's get into the bands, scenes, records, and people that made this story matter.

A single can feel like an instant manifesto, short, loud, and unfiltered, ready to land in a mailbox or record store aisle.

Every groove had to punch through cheap equipment and even cheaper expectations.

That's why the first few hundred copies mattered more than the press kits that followed.

The Dam's debut single New Rose cracked open UK radio like a neon bomb.

Its raw guitars ricocheted off the cheap tape machine in the attic studio where Dave was still sleeping on a bean bag.

And then there's the whole green light from major labels like Island Records, which signed The Damned, a British band whose earlier releases were recorded on 7-inch cassettes in garages.

The Damned had been making waves in London's underground, but when Island pressed their debut single New Rose into slick vinyl with a big marketing push, it was considered a coup.

Some fans swore that the band's raw energy was compromised by a glossy aesthetic, yet the record sold well enough to fund their next tour through European capitals.

Rancid's first releases were limited vinyls pressed by their own label.
