Andreessen came from humbler beginnings.

He grew up on the piney edges of New Lisbon, Wisconsin, a small town about two hours from Milwaukee.

His childhood home was a split level about the footprint of one of his swimming pools today.

It still sits on a shallow lake inlet and hasn't changed much since the Reagan era.

For years after escaping, Andreessen professed to hate talking about his youth there and rarely did.

For a renowned native son who's lately been ascribing his moral reawakening to his proud Wisconsin heritage, it's remarkable how few vestiges of him remain there.

There's no bronze plaque commemorating his role in the tech boom in New Lisbon's tired downtown.

Residents say he pretty much disappeared long before he was pictured on a throne, barefoot, on the cover of Time magazine in 1996.
