New Covent Garden Market

Our next investigation takes us to Salisbury and into the labs of Wessex Archaeology, where experts are analysing over 100 skeletons from a recently unearthed 19th-century paupers' graveyard.

In 2016, Wessex Archaeology began working alongside developers who were about to build on the disused New Covent Garden flower market site in Battersea, London.

150 years ago, a graveyard occupied this site, but everyone thought that it had been fully removed in the 1960s.

So the team was surprised to find that a 100-metre strip at the edge of the cemetery still remained.
