I had a good July, frankly.
DaniHOST

For me, the month started with Kalela putting out new Avatar.

And my sort of lesbian... lesbian pantheon yes let's say that my lesbian pantheon if you open up the book of danny and you get to the lesbian chapter it will start with kalela um yes because hallucinogen was a very important important album to me in terms of for whatever there are like some things that you make you realize oh wait this is who i am hallucinogen despite not being a very like a lesbian album colella's not a lesbian uh it just came around that time where i said something's percolating here and i think it's

lesbianism How many lesbians have been converted by a beautiful African woman? Doesn't matter whether or not she's a lesbian.
DaniHOST
4:38
Her voice isn't very prominent in them, but the beat kind of pounds a little bit.
DaniHOST
4:43
This is what Kalila does very well.
DaniHOST
4:46
She does that with New Avatar, but throws in a little bit of a grungy guitar, a heavy synth, That sounds really, really good.
LotusHOST
5:01
Yeah, this is like a R&B future garage pop album, I guess.
Tom KlarHOST
52:41
All right, everyone, uh, we have come to the end of the show now.
Tom KlarHOST
52:45
That was Kelela with, uh, Point Blank off of her new album, New Avatar, which is another incredible album that came out this year.
Tom KlarHOST
52:52

We're listening to Wash My Soul by Tricky and before that we had Retaliation Lullaby by Kalela from her recent album New Avatar.
Anna LibHOST
55:02
And yeah, we're actually coming up to the end of the show, sadly.
Anna LibHOST

Next up is the new album from Kalayla.
Monty LukeHOST
6:24
New Avatar is her fifth studio album and it was released back in July on the Warp Records label.
Monty LukeHOST
6:30
Kat, what did you think of New Avatar?
Kat DavidsHOST
6:35
yeah for me I almost like I think artists hate when you say that but I almost like her older albums more even though I think but that's a very personal I think choice because for me if it's like very old modernly produced and very poppy I almost get more distant to the music if that makes sense like if it goes more in the direction of R&B and soul and indie for me if it's like a bit more fragile and almost like smoky i connect with it way more like i think my favorite band of all times is portisette and beth gibbons the singer and they're like this kind of trip-hop analog dusty feel really draws me in and i think with that album from kelela it felt very polish in a way but i think that's just when you compare it if you just listen to that i think some people would disagree I kind of liked like these kind of lushness in the drums in some of the tracks.
Kat DavidsHOST
7:35
And I think it's also interesting that she was throwing like almost indie guitar vibes in there.
Kat DavidsHOST
7:51
But it's also, I think I wouldn't return to it either so much.
Kat DavidsHOST
7:57
We're
Monty LukeHOST
7:57
talking about the new album by Kalayla, New Avatar.
