Neo-Luddism

I talked to Ryan offline.

And, uh, not to speak out of turn, but, uh, you know, I would vote for Ryan as the leader of the neo-Luddite movement.

Um, I think, I think he's got a lot of interesting ideas there.

Uh, man, the AI thing, I was thinking that we should...

Like that, that kind of like default West Coast politics that's just, that's just completely changed.

And then I think the final thing that I'll say building on something that Jonah said is that like I think the ne- the next thing to talk about with this, the next frontier is should, should the left be part of a, a new Luddism or like a new movement that is saying like, "This stuff has just gone too far.

It's bad for us as human beings.

We need to, we need to just put this stuff down," and essentially kind of battling with the idea of progress and the idea that increased technological innovation all the time is, is just good for us.

And, you know, p- part of the problem with that, as I said in the kind of introduction to the hot take, was, is then we end up kind of reproducing the existing cycles of how the media operates, of what the media says is important and not important, of the ideological content of the information economy instead of which I f- I feel left-wing and liberatory politics should be about, which is how can we move beyond the things that the ruling elite are telling us are important or that we should care about, or the structure of the world, or the reasons for things happening.

And it feels like, you know, a media platform that markets itself as being left-wing should be thinking in that paradigm or shift way as opposed to, oh, how can we just kind of change the flavor of an existing deeply problematic set of institutions and power structures.

Just on the, um, the New Luddism and maybe the Green Party as well, to go back to, to Joe, I really think we shouldn't underestimate, like, the all-enticing kind of gravitational pull of electoralism.

And, like, I guess part of the promise of your party is that it was fresh and it was new, right? [chuckles] And so there might have been some room for local groups to define a little bit what it is that they want to do, right? [chuckles] And some of those groups would have existed in places where the possibility for just doing electoralism would've been a bit more remote than other places, right? Obviously, this is just fanciful talk now anyway 'cause the thing's dead.

Those kind of people, and if, if enough of them are in charge, it's gonna make this whole process painful.

I think they can't stop it, just like I think the neo-Luddites can't stop the growth of AI and these data centers being built out.

They may help push some of it up into orbit, which I think is coming as well, which is super interesting.

Um, but you just can't stop this movement.
