John Hayes on Cork club championship group stage drama
M

and Castlehaven being not an agreed 2-18 to 4-10, it does mean that we will have an all-West Cork quarter-final in Clonacilty versus Newstown on Saturday the 26th in Dunmanway.
M
1:40Matthew HurleyHOST
Also, a mouth-watering tie between Castlehaven and Nemo Rangers on Sunday the 27th in Clonacilty, and the Carberry Divisional side are hoping up against St. Finbar's team that have lost two games in the group stages, including last week at the Mallow Day Clash on Sunday the 27th in the first of that doubleheader in Clonacilty.
M
1:57Matthew HurleyHOST
So I suppose a lot to get through there in terms of the quarter-finals.
M
2:01Matthew HurleyHOST
Those are absolutely bow-watering ties.

But overall, I think it's a great system.
J
23:41John HayesGUEST
And I think last weekend was massively entertaining.
M
23:45Matthew HurleyHOST
If you look at another tie there, Neymar Rangers against Castlehaven, you mentioned that one of the big three in the status quo will go out of the championship.
M
23:52Matthew HurleyHOST
One of these sides will go out in Castlehaven or Neymar Rangers.

Inside the ground, I found myself cheering for Fossa as if they were my team.
J
49:13Joe MolloyHOST
I grew up playing for Nemo Rangers in Cork, but I really felt like I was cheering for Real Betis whenever David Clifford landed one of his 15 points.
J
49:21Joe MolloyHOST
My question, can we cheer for GAA clubs other than our own? Obviously, you can be a Man United fan and want Real Betis to do well, but can you be a Nemo fan and also cheer on Fossa and their number 14? As an aside, I did join the pitch invasion, but even at that, I could not get my program signed by David.

Beetlemania is alive and well in Killarney, and I love it," says Rory.
Scoreboard controversy in Cork GAA as Carrigaline and Clon lay down markers.

It's the curiosity of how the ranking system compares teams from different groups and you have a funny situation.
D
1:10Dennis HurleyPANELIST
Now this year where, like you say, Nemo Rangers topped the group with Valley Rovers and Eustis Town after they won two and lost one each.
D
1:17Dennis HurleyPANELIST
So Nemo Rangers were the third seeds with four points.
D
1:20Dennis HurleyPANELIST
And then Castlehaven were the fourth seeds with fifth points.
D
1:23Dennis HurleyPANELIST
With five points, yeah, yeah.
D

forwards like and a midfielder like they've had a poor league obviously they lost to Newstown put them into a corner and you know they've come up strongly obviously a huge test of weights now in the quarterfinals but they're there and yeah and listen there'll be underdogs in that as
E
4:10Eamon MurphyHOST
well I think they're hoping to have maybe Mark Cronin back yeah Brian Hayes probably not
B
4:15Barry O'MahonyPANELIST
yeah Brian Hayes probably not I know he's been played by Rangers which is a pity because you know he's been a promising underage player for Neymar and for Cork so

Newstown again in a strong enough position, they face St. Michael's in Riverstick at 4pm on Sunday and Newstown only a win obviously will get them into the knockout stages and they're in a strong position to do so.
M
6:53Matthew HurleyHOST
Just to mention the other game of the group as well here in Valley Rovers against Nemo Rangers in Ballyhandley at the same time.
M
6:59Matthew HurleyHOST
That's a crucial game because if Valley Rovers win that game and Newstown beat St. Michael's then Nemo are out of the championship.
M
7:04Matthew HurleyHOST
That's incredible to think in a way but you had two crucial games there but from a Newstown perspective you would expect them to beat St. Michael's but at the same time it's effectively a knockout game there as well.
K
7:37Kieran McCarthyHOST
So St. Michael's can't qualify for the knockout stages.
K
7:41Kieran McCarthyHOST
Am I right there? But they're they're they're in that relegation kind of conversation if you look at mellow and earn zero points in in division one and you've not been in colligan zero points in division three and st michael's earned zero points in division two it's the two bottom place teams we went to relegation playoff so that's probably forefront in st michael's mind getting the results that will take them out of the of the relegation kind of conversation But for Newstown, it's all about getting the win that will get them into the knockout stage, because we know they were one of the stories of last year's championship, getting to the semifinal.
K
8:14Kieran McCarthyHOST
Unlucky to lose to Nemo Rangers there.
K
8:17Kieran McCarthyHOST
We know there's talent in this team.
Thrilling club action showcases best of Cork hurling.
D
38:05Dennis HurleyPANELIST
So basically Newstown, if they win, they will be true.
D
38:08Dennis HurleyPANELIST
And then if Neymar beat Valleys...
D
38:12Dennis HurleyPANELIST
Nemo would have a better scoring difference than Valleys.
D
38:15Dennis HurleyPANELIST
So Valleys could go out there after two wins, GCID.

They've had some very good, tough matches that they've won reasonably convincingly.

They have lads from Nemo Rangers or Donovan Rasa, Bishopstown, Russell Rovers, all these, Mitchelstown, all these well-known, famous clubs.
E

So they've been hard to get by.

But at the same time, we've a lot of great lads in our squad too.
