When I was a kid, I loved the comic 2000AD.

I remember buying the first edition, which I still have, and which is apparently worth a fortune, in 1977.

These stories might seem silly or strange, but in truth, they're really rather important.

It's just that their message comes in a very palatable and human form.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to feel anything other than revulsion and, frankly, hate towards American social media giants.

The equivalence drawn between big tech and big tobacco is entirely justified.

Evidently, all that requires vision, intellect and courage, traits which are increasingly rare in modern British politics.

So, unfortunately, the chances of Britain leading the world in throwing off the shackles of American social media giants are about as likely as someone being nice on Twitter.

The tragedy of my generation is that we were raised in a period when news and analysis moved slowly enough for even those who didn't stay across current affairs to have a fairly good understanding of important events.

I recall as a teenager watching reports of the Westland affair, Google it kids, lead the news for an entire year.
