Hey everyone, it's Neil here, as you may have guessed.

Now the UN has just voted to change its maps away from the traditional Mercator projection in favour of a more accurate map.

As always on this podcast, we were way ahead of the curve, so we thought that we would dip into the archive and bring you this chat with a fascinating geographer, author and BBC presenter, Nicholas Crane, about maps, history and Mercator himself.

And it distorted every single country, every single landmass, and every single ocean was distorted in order to end up with this true loxodrome, it's called.

The actual angle, the bearing that would remain true on 2D and 3D.

Okay, so if the distortion was necessary from the point of view of maintaining this beautiful word you've just given us, the loxodrome, what were the results of the distortion? So we know the poles were stretched, but am I right in thinking, because now you've reminded me that there's a website called the truesize.com, which allows you to drag a country, which I assume, again, Neil, you'll tell me, this is from the Mercator projection, that's the map we're used to.
