Now, the Irish Sun has launched a new investigative series examining Ireland's children in care crisis, looking at serious failures within the state care system and the experiences of some of the country's most vulnerable people.

The series, State of Neglect, examines cases involving children going missing from care, grooming and sexual exploitation, as well as unexplained deaths and concerns around the protection and oversight of children known to the state.

Now, one of the cases at the centre of renewed scrutiny is that of local boy, Cairn Dernan.

And I'm going to be talking about that in just a moment.

Absolutely.

Now, obviously, with regard to the cases this week that we just mentioned, further investigations obviously will be ongoing into the deaths of those young people.

But your series State of Neglect, bearing in mind what we've just said, is extremely timely because it examines cases involving children going missing from care centres grooming, sexual exploitation and unexplained deaths.

So let's look at the case of Cairn Dernan, who is a boy that was known to the authorities.
