Well, technology continues to create new opportunities for farmers, including dairy farmers, to improve farm management and operations.

Owen Bewley, general manager of Nedap's North American business, dairy business, discusses in this week's interview from our World Dairy Expo coverage how technology is impacting today's farms.

A lot of technology shown here in the dairy space at World Dairy Expo, but no matter where you go in the industry, you'll find a lot of it.

I'm here joined by Owen with Nedap.

Yes.

First, tell us, who is Nedap?

So Nedap is a, uh, at this point, for what we're here at Expo for, a dairy innovations technology company.

Nedap as a whole is 97-year-old organization based out of the Netherlands, and our primary businesses are livestock, dairy, retail, security, and a little bit of healthcare.

Well, Susan Littlefield spent time at World Dairy Expo and she shares a conversation with the folks at Nedap.

We're gonna learn more about technology in the dairy parlor, and it's a unique piece of equipment that some dairy farmers might even not know they have.

And let's talk about Connective Cow.

What is this technology, and how is it benefiting the dairy producer?

So we're very fortunate here at Nedap to not just have a device or a trinket or a piece, but we've really envisioned and created a whole ecosystem that goes around the dairy cow, and that looks at from health monitoring, milk monitoring, now recently adding cameras and locomotion detection.

And then we decided to make the herd all one herd when we buil- built that new barn.

So we had to decide whether we would go with the CowScout collar, which was a Nedap product at that stage, uh, or would we stick with SCR.

Well, the newest technology we had was the CowScout.

It made the choice, it made the choice pretty easy to go with whichever was the, the newest technology, the, that we had the new collars on.

So, so that was when we started probably with Nedap collars.

And then as we worked through that, and we got involved with the, the Alta doing all the breeding on the farm, and we decided that we wanted to go with a subscription model.

So that was when we went with the Alta Cow Watch, which is powered by Nedap, which is where the co- relationship started.

So, so how do we make it work? Um, so this is a 5,000 cow dairy.

Mm

... 'cause we've just put Nedap collars in, uh, here, and that's, that's changed it a lot, so yeah.

How do you think that's gonna change what people do, Fliss? Like, how they manage the cows?

Just in a different way.

It was a fun experience.

You know, there was a whole lot of trust involved, but NEDAP really took care of us.

So they have my faith.
