Near East Side

A study done by the Ohio State University in the 2010s also looked at where are high-cost predatory loans being issued in Columbus neighborhoods today, and what they found was a very clear pattern.

yet again, it was Linden, the Near East Side, South of Children's Hospital, Franklinton, the same neighborhoods that were getting predatory private sector loans, the buy here, pay here, or the zero down payments.

Those were happening in the same neighborhoods that we were redlined.

So United Way of Central Ohio, where we are very concerned about about people who are struggling to take advantage of the prosperity of Central Ohio, we looked at a series of maps, all of which were looking at different social determinants of health to see, is there a correlation between the maps of the 1930s and the social conditions of the 2020s? And what we saw was this.

When we compare infant mortality rates, we see that infant mortality rates look a lot like the neighborhoods that were redlined in the 1930s.

And if you can create a mental model of a map of Columbus in your head with me, what I want to suggest to you is there's a backwards L that's going to run from Linden down through Milo Grogan, the near east side and the near south side.

It's going to leap over German Village in downtown, and then it's going to run out Sullivan Avenue and West Broad Street.

This reversed L is really the map of social conditions of our city.

Yeah.

I think you told me in a previous conversation we had that you recently moved to Columbus' Near East Side.

Is that right?
