Neah Bay

We would love to.

So he gets discharged in 2001, uh, relocates with his girlfriend and infant squaw to Neah Bay, Washington, a small fishing community of roughly 800 people on the Makah Indian Reservation.

He took a job with the Makah Tribal Council.

This guy's fascinating.

I mean, it was perfect as long as it was not having to get trailered a lot.

I trailered it, but it, you know, it's not a day trip boat and I'm wanting to, now that my wife and I can, can travel a little bit more and hopefully have a little bit more free time, get something that we can, trailer down to California and fish for a week or two and trailer up to Neah Bay and trailer down to Westport and just kind of hit some different areas a little bit easier.

So I'm kind of thinking maybe something in the 28 foot range or something like that.

But I haven't figured it out for sure.

Well, some of

the most complex diving is in Neah Bay and the water velocity and force of the water moving is some of the highest currents I've ever swam in.

So next time I'm in those situations, I'll just imagine I'm a little salmon.

We've only had Native American representation sort of just last year, and that w- was just on the off chance that they were, um, um, they had some...

Well, we had a cancellation, to be honest, and they brought some representatives from near the tribe that are part of their, um, what do you call it? Shaman Shack, which is like a group of people that meet out near Neah Bay.

Makah.

And so we, we had, almost had some Makah elder representation last year.

It fell short of that.

Um, actually Brian Gagnon, who's a Makah elder, did show up, and so the- Just to speak a little bit about who Brian Gagnon is, uh, he's a Makah Native American, been on the Makah reservation, I believe, his whole life, grown out.

You know, Neah Bay is the most northwestern part of the United States.

So when you stand, and Ally, you've been there before, you're looking out, like, to the, one of the most spectacular views you can ever think of, which is, like, this little dock that faces out over the Pacific Northwest.

Maybe that's the difference.

You know, when I go out here to the coast here and fish at Neah Bay or something, I can absolutely get seasick out there.

Yeah.

And I've never had it happen in Columbia.

One of the best birds of my whole peninsula birding experience, actually.

So a white wagtail showed up out at Neah Bay, which is the coolest little black and white bird about the size of...

I guess it's about robin-sized, but it's a little svelter.

And it runs around on the sand, and it bobs its tail kind of like a dipper.

Authorities did not realize that a body could travel such a significant distance.

The body was spotted by individuals aboard an American vessel near Port Renfrew and was retrieved by the U.S. Coast Guard in Neah Bay, Washington, who brought it to the island.

An autopsy on the remains found no evidence of violence, disease, drugs, or alcohol.

Full-body x-rays were performed, and no fractures were observed.
