So you earned a-- You got out, joined the military, earned a Naval ROTC scholarship, headed to UD, University of San Diego.

There's a story you shared about your second semester when you walked into your ROTC unit prepared to quit, and your commanding officer kind of surprised you.

Can you, can you share that story?

So I think my journey when I started ROTC was, wasn't really easy.

There, there weren't really...

There's a lot of naval ROTC that were on the Navy option side.

Yeah.

But it started, I went to college on a, um, an ROTC scholarship.

It was a Navy ROTC Marine Corps option, so it was kind of weird any time you went on a, uh, at a, uh, military base because we had Navy uniforms with Marine Corps emblems, so nobody really knew what we were.

So I graduated, was commissioned, um, and my interest in dogs and HRT came about, uh, from my last assignment.

I was the OIC of the tactical platoon for the Provost Marshal's Office at Camp Pendleton, and one of the responsibilities was military working dogs.

Yeah.

Because I was in the University of Colorado NROTC, Naval ROTC unit.

Not on scholarship,

because my grades in high school were not great.

They hooked me up.

At the time, my wife was going back to Texas, where she was from.

They got me a tour at the University of Texas Naval ROTC unit.

I really rode out my last year and a half

...ceremony down on the green turf of Memorial Stadium involving the three ROTC units at the University of Texas.

The Naval ROTC, the Air Force ROTC, and the Army ROTC.

We understand the university is the only school in Texas with all three branches of the service represented.

The three units are massed out on the playing field and now their colors are being brought forward to the position occupied by the Longhorn Band down at the south end of the field to our right, at which time there will be an invocation followed by our national anthem.

Who knows whether that was another intersection with the Manson area.

Yeah, so Brant was apparently planning to bomb the Navy ROTC building next when he was arrested on the morning of March 31, 1972, along with two would-be accomplices, both the Quinces of Jack Scott's, Michael Borton, B-O-R-T-I-N, who would later join the SLA, okay, alarm here, you know, SLA again, and Paul Rubenstein.

The trio was apprehended in a Berkeley garage packed with weapons and explosives.

Upon hearing news of the bust, Jack Scott sprang into action, helping Brant's girlfriend, Wendy Yoshimura, okay, also an SLA member, who had rented the garage under an alias, go underground, first driving her to L.A., then flying her to the East Coast, where she assumed a new identity.

Well, the next year, Army ROTC from ASU, they were working out, and I said, can you guys come over and help put the flags up? They joined us.

The following year, the Navy came, Navy ROTC.

and Marine ROTC and ASU Air Force ROTC.

Most people don't know that we have one of the largest, finest ROTC programs in the country, and it's right at ASU.
