National Viewers' and Listeners' Association

Right.

For those unfamiliar, Mary Whitehouse and her National Viewers and Listeners Association were essentially the ultimate, incredibly powerful conservative watchdogs of British television in the 1980s.

They wielded a lot of influence.

A ton of influence.

Now...

Mary Whitehouse is the head of the National Viewers Listeners Association, the NVLA, which is a fringe pressure group.

She's not part of the government.

She's not part of anything official.

So then comes along a woman called Mary Whitehouse, who, if the newspapers, if history is to be believed, her and Margaret Thatcher would skip through the fields of hell together, taking away liberties from people.

But she was the founder of the National Viewers and Listeners Association, and she campaigned against declining standards in British broadcasting.

Now, this woman had no legal power or official appointment.

She was just a really good lobbyist.
