Cassim was speaking at the Tshwane University of Technology, where he met with university management over the more than 300 NSFAS cases that came through his help desk.

He says some institutions are now under financial pressure because of outstanding tuition payments from NSFAS.

Cassim warns that the situation could affect universities' ability to pay their employees.

He says the department is continuing to put pressure on NSFAS to resolve the funding shortfall.

All of the issues we take up on behalf of students or other affected, uh, citizens, uh, that have any issues within the sector, and then we process those issues, and we add urgency, and we attempt to resolve, uh, or get those issues resolved.

And that's that sort of registration fee, which most of us will be familiar with paying.

And there was no NSFAS student who was ever going to need to pay that.

What we're simply saying is, okay, if you're an honors, masters, or a student from an international student, you should be able to pay this amount.

And that fund is really necessary for the beginning of the year.
