Dave Martin Sr. of Haver was recently recognized by the National Ski Patrol for his 50 years of service.

The mission of the National Ski Patrol is to promote safety and service in outdoor recreation by educating, training, and supporting dedicated patrollers who assist those enjoying mountains, trails, and slopes.

Dave has patrolled at the Bear Paw Ski Hill south of Haver for all 50 of those years.

For nearly all those years, he has served as the hill manager, a combination rarely seen in the skiing world.

Yes

... for the National Ski Patrol, and when I read that, I'm like, I have no idea what that means.

[laughs] So maybe you can tell us, what does that mean? [laughs]

It's been really, really fun.

[laughs]

...

he taught me how to ski, and then I took a bunch of lessons, and we ended up getting recruited to be national ski patrollers.

So what we do is we go out, es- usually, like, on the weekends or evenings, and we volunteer our time, and we patrol the hill, and we take care of injured skiers, and we essentially are the bridge between a patient, their injury, and handing them off to the paramedics and our health system.

25% goes to Team Colorado Caribou to compete at the Special Olympics.

Um, there's a swap in Grant Junction where entry fee to that goes to the National Ski Patrol.

The Hesperus Ski Swap at La Plata County Fairgrounds, that is, um, that's actually split between a, a few different groups.

Um- And then you also have, like, ski teams and outdoor education groups hosting some of these ski swaps, so you'll find that in Steamboat Springs, in Vail, in Copper.
