National day of mourning

Unlike for many other families, whose loved ones' remains were never recovered.

A National Day of Mourning was declared in Ireland on Friday the 14th of September.

People attended religious ceremonies and there were long queues throughout the week at the American Embassy as the people of Ireland waited to sign the Book of Condolences to express their support and sympathy to the American people.

In 1975, soldiers entered a residence in Dhaka and assassinated Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family who were there with him.

Decades later, the date was observed across the country as the National Day of Mourning.

Flags were lowered, prayers were held, and the nation looked back at one of the darkest mornings in its history.

But on August 15th, 2013, as Bangladesh remembered the violence of the past, another home in Dhaka was becoming the scene of a mystery of its own.

And living with them was their plus one, an 11-year-old domestic helper, a little girl named Sumi.

Now, the 15th of August is not an ordinary date in Bangladesh.

It's the National Day of Mourning, like I said, the anniversary of the 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of the country, who was murdered along with most of his family inside his own home in Dhaka.

Every year on this day, in this era, flags flew at half-mast, the city slowed down, and the country collectively remembered the most infamous thing to ever happen inside a Bangladeshi home.
