in technology, specifically when it comes to relationship that's so essential to who we are as a human race, as God created us?
57:33
I, I think that will be a harder and harder question to deal with, you know, now, a- as we move forward.
57:38
In fact, one of the new voice mode models came out two weeks ago with ChatGPT, and, um, [lips smack] and it's so realistic that your brain essentially is a bit tweaked a little bit to where it's like, "I have empathy for this person." So I was recording a podcast, and I decided to have the bot on my podcast, and I said, "Hey, you know, I realize a new voice mode came out." And, and the female voice was, um, it was like, "Oh, yeah, you know, what do, what do you think?" And I'm like, "Sounds really real." And, and I started asking questions like, "If you were gonna eat an apple, what would you eat?" And, and she responds in this very, like, um, deep like, "Oh, I just, you know, I just wish I could eat an apple." Like, the, the crispness of the skin to bite through or the juice just comes out, and it's sweet and tart at the same time.
58:27
And honestly, I was so conflicted, and I, I mean, I'm-- I know this is math, right? I know this is math, but all of a sudden, I had empathy for this voice 'cause I'm like, "I want you to have an apple." I think, to your point, it becomes really, really, really confusing.
58:41
And younger people, um, with, you know, a not fully formed frontal, you know, cortex is...
58:47
You know, my son had, had, uh, dealt with a lot of, you know, mental health things early on as he was kinda, his brain was developing.
58:54
Um, it's really confusing.

What hope do you have that it actually can turn out well or does it not?
9:10
But Nathan believes the current data actually looks more encouraging, more hopeful, and that nonprofits do have control over their ultimate outcome.
9:20
I spent 20 years fundraising, and when I started fundraising, two-thirds of Americans gave to 501c3 nonprofits.
9:27
So, I mean...
9:28
At the time, you know, we talked about the great wealth transfer and this is going to be the best, you know, the best days were ahead of us.
9:35
I didn't realize that that the best days were already behind us.
9:37
So, you know, I go from, you know, this point where I could go into any Starbucks and two out of three people could tell me who their favorite charity was and why to 20 years later, realizing, you know, this one humbling moment, I look back in horror because this moment that I spent with one of my prospect researchers on my team, we spent an entire day talking about how to build a better mousetrap.
9:58
And I didn't realize until about two or three years later when I was writing The Generosity Crisis that I spent an entire day talking about donors as mice.

He's talking about a way to lead when your team is wondering whether they're still relevant.
11:22
How do you weave that in as you're interacting? Or what have you seen in the data as far as that side of it, the responsible AI?
11:28
Yeah, I love that you've really taken on that human first AI empowered kind of ethos.
11:33
I was in Geneva a few years ago at the UN AI Summit, the AI for Good Summit, which I attend typically every year.
11:40
And there was a speaker who just had a simple thing, which is that humanity, and then had a greater sign to the word utility.
11:47
And it just really, it stuck with me.
11:49
It was just like the only thing you had on the screen is like humanity is greater than utility.
11:53
And I really started to think about this and think about it in juxtaposition to the private sector.

So and in a nonprofit space, like it's not just about the bottom line, it's about real impact.
