When I started my practice back in 2019, I was working as a full-time criminal lawyer.

And my only understanding of cannabis hemp at the time was through the lens of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

which classifies cannabis as a scheduled narcotic, as a contraband.

And I also understood it from the point of view of something that you prosecuted people for.

It is worth understanding how we got into this situation in the first place because the story of cannabis prohibition in India is not... linked to public health concern.

It is actually a story of geopolitical compliance.

So back in the day, the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 19, it happened to come into force and it was the foundational international drug control treaty that classified cannabis under Schedule 1 alongside substances with high abuse potential and Under Schedule 4, which was the most restrictive category reserved for substances deemed so dangerous that even medicinal use was considered unacceptable.

Now, cannabis was placed there not on the basis of clinical evidence and not even on any comparative pharmacological assessment, but largely on the basis of American ideological pressure.

And police arrest 14 suspects over cultivation and distribution of narcotic drugs.

Now to the details.

The Food and Drugs Authority, FDA, has warned the public against buying or consuming food and beverages damaged or contaminated by flood water following recent flooding in parts of Ghana.

The adjournment is to allow the Supreme Court to determine an application seeking to restrain the High Court from conducting the trial during the legal vacation.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear the injunction application on August 20.

Police have arrested 14 suspects for the alleged involvement in the cultivation and distribution of narcotic drugs.

The arrests form part of efforts by the police to clamp down on the illicit drug trade in the country.
