Najm al-Din Ayyub

[instrumental music] Saladin: Sword of Chivalry tells the sweeping epic life story of Yusuf ibn Ayyub, the man history immortalizes as Saladin.

Across the fractured landscapes of the twelfth century Near East, where atabegs traded cities like coin and Crusader kingdoms dug their roots deep into the Levantine coast, few figures emerged to match his profound historical gravity.

Born in the quiet citadel of Tikrit in 1137 under the shadow of sudden exile, his early life was far removed from the pomp of kingship.

Raised in the disciplined administrative household of his father, Ayyub, and schooled in the vibrant intellectual circles of Damascus, he spent his youth as a quiet, precise administrator, more comfortable with market ledgers and legal scholarship than the brutal calculus of the battlefield.

Yet history, and the fierce ambition of his warrior uncle Shirkuh, would not permit him the quiet life he preferred.

Pulled southward into the turbulent politics of Fatimid Egypt through three grinding expeditions, Saladin rose from a reluctant military lieutenant to become the vizier of the Nile by 1169.

Torches gutter along the parapet where sentries pace the same worn stretch of stone they have paced every night for years, their breath fogging faintly in the spring chill, their eyes turned less toward the river than toward the keep behind them, where a light burns in an upper chamber that has not gone dark since sundown.

Word has already moved through the garrison the way word always moves through a fortress under siege of its own anticipation: quietly, quickly, from guard to guard, from kitchen to stable.
