In his book Mythologies, Roland Barthes studied how a sign picks up a second meaning that makes a human choice look natural.

He called that second meaning a myth.

Later, in his book The Fashion System, he read the captions in fashion magazines like Elle, lines like, "Prints win at the races." The caption never says who decided that prints are in this season.

Let's make beef plentiful again.

So Roland Barthes in his 1956 Mythologies says that this idea of steak becomes this national myth in France sort of as a shared memory, um, of something that we used to have and we now no longer have, but we want again.
