My Iron Lung

So I think I kinda had to have it as my number one.

And shout out you guys for doing such an excellent podcast on the album, and going through track by track, and talking about those incredible songs like My Iron Lung, and Street Spirit, and, you know, even the, the, the less heralded songs off of that record, um, of which I'd say are kind of the rest of them really, apart from High and Dry and Just, which everyone goes on about as well.

But the entire record is a 10 out of 10 incredible, perfect, wonderful record which takes me back to school, my school days, and sort of discovering alternative music for the first time.

It's one of the first proper sort of alternative music, um, albums that I, I felt like was, was mine.

Ah.

Yeah, wonderful stuff.

And so, yeah, the song that we just played was My Iron Lung-

Mm

After the song blew up, Albert Hammond and Mike Hazelwood were added because of The Air That I Breathe, the Hollies record from 1974.

And My Iron Lung, on the Benz in 1995, is York writing about the trap, a hit that keeps you breathing and keeps you from walking away.

They played Creep less and less after the OK Computer tour.

The audience still demanded the patient.

One more song.

You know what we got to do? My Iron Lung, right? Should we do a little self-awareness argument? My Iron Lung is about creep.

We talked about it in the original episode.

I think it's the most interesting thing on this album.

The lyric is about a song that became so large, it started sustaining the band that made it.

This is my iron lung.

The song that breathes for you when you can't breathe.

York's writing about an experience of making music that outgrew him.
