My Favorite Thing Is Monsters

Matt and Kelly are just doing some really wild stuff with this, you know, icon that i thought i was sick of but i feel like i have finally discovered my favorite version of dracula and it's matt wagner and kelly jones's dracula

our next comic book club will be at barnes and noble and reston on october 4th at 4 p.m we'll be discussing emil ferris's my favorite thing is monsters and it's a thick it's a thickie yeah we gotta start reading we gotta start reading sunday you gotta

hope okay yeah

we gotta start reading you gotta start reading

no that's brilliant I think it's brilliant

yeah I don't know I think that's probably why I started writing myself and why I started acting right like I felt like there was something in me that was called so deeply to the text that was almost unbidden like I didn't feel like I was making a choice I was just responding um and I felt very invested as a kid in the books I read like I remember um reading uh Oliver Twist with my dad and like fantasizing about giving him food and you know like that there was a kind of feeling of they just felt very real to me um The reason I chose My Favorite Thing is Monsters is that I really wanted a graphic novel in here, but also I really wanted a piece of genre fiction.

The thing that I felt as a shift in my 20s was that I realized at a certain point, like, oh, I'm not reading at, like, a high... like, I'm not reading a lot of books anymore, and I had always read a lot of books, like, very high volume, and I realized that part of the reason that I wasn't reading a lot is that I was trying to read really difficult books that, like, the English major in me had, like, like, I just, like, you know, like, I've never finished Swan's Way.

I just, like, couldn't do it, and And I felt like, okay, well, I can't move on.

Really helpful.

Yeah, for sure.

Well, let's talk about my favorite thing is monsters.

Yeah.

Yeah, so people who, who look at my comics will probably guess right away that classic pen and ink cartoonists like Joe Sacco and Robert Crumb are big inspirations to me.

I love Emil Ferris and My Favorite Thing Is Monsters.

A lot of my friends here in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia are huge inspirations to me.

Chris Burton and Alex Forbes from the, the Hopetown Mysteries.
