Murray cod

There's a free campground or gold coin donation campground at Goulnair just down the road.

There is Murray Cod in there, but you mainly catch silver perch and golden perch.

I like going there when it's warm.

daughter can just play around like the water's like a beach like muddy beach but it's like a beach so she can just play in the water and play around and then when a rod screams off she can grab it and reel in a fish there's not lots of big snags in there so she's caught some really good fish out of there um on light line um actually her best is a four and a half kilo silver perch on one kilo line that was like 60 centimeters that's a good fish yeah monster like it took about 20 minutes to get in but there's no snags in there so it's not like fishing the murray so they can kids can just take their time and there um i'd like to do that

Just big bodied fish that just play up.

So in Murray Cod, I actually think it was born for that because when you catch a big fish, you want to sit it in the water and let it swim while you do it.

That's what they're for.

Anyway, I have made the issue of using that.

So finding the area that the fish are sitting in is problem one to solve, right? Because you've got to be putting your lure...

You've got to increase your chances for lightning your strike.

But you could find a beautiful bank, right, with... little oyster encrusted rocks you know around there with a beautiful um tapered off bank that's got mullet and whiting and herring up on it that's great you've got to then put yourself there at the right time when you think those fish are going to actually eat your lure like you said they will see your lure there's no question about that reese creed gives a great analogy who fishes for murray cod he drifts 30 40 50 k's down the the murrumbidgee or the murray And he knows every single cast he puts in there with the top water lure, obviously in dead, still calm conditions.

The Murray cod knows that lure has just landed there.

Before we move to your next question, do you have any other favourite SA species that isn't mulloway?

Recently I've been getting into Murray cod fishing.

So a native fish to SA.

I think they're a very significant fish.

That is partly another alternative to fishing.

I think more so just bettering our fishing opportunities here in SA.

So, for say, if you can't fish the ocean on that particular day and you're looking at targeting something different, you've got Murray Cod, you've got freshwater fishing.

Ah.

This is

not your normal Murray Cod fishing trip.

Well, I'll just start with that because I had a shower this morning and I was like, how good is this? Oh,

yeah.

Like, what are you looking at and thinking, like, that's a good area? Like, what are you looking for to think, I should maybe have a look there or not?

Yeah, so this time of year, I'd be looking at the river arms.

I think what we know about big Murray Cod is when they sort of start to get into that spawn season, they move up river.

And yeah, so I'd probably pick one of the arms, the river arms, which is what we've done.

And that's when they're especially vulnerable to things like foxes that will come and kind of snatch them up as they're making those overland movements.

There is some evidence that maybe juveniles can get taken by large birds of prey, or even we have a large fish here in Australia called the Murray Cod, which is a big freshwater predatory fish.

There's some evidence that juveniles could be taken by them, but primarily we suspect that probably foxes is the biggest problem with them.

When we removed the water from the stilling basin, we also found 20 shopping trolleys, two electric scooters and three bikes, Mr Rampton said.

We did manage to find some quite large Murray Cod.

We found five Murray Cod and four Golden Perch, which had obviously made their way over the spillway and into the stilling basin.

So we relocated them back into the main dam.

We also found some Murray Cod and Perch in the Gungahlin stilling basin as well.

Mr Rampton said lowering the water was a bit like pulling the plug in a bath by opening a valve on the dam wall.

We have a valve that we can manually open.

These I examined were of a yellowish-green colour, covered with irregular black spots, with a silvery abdomen.

They are named by the colonists River Cod, and by the aborigines Mewaruk.

In the stomach of this fish I frequently found shellfish of the genus Unio in an entire state.

The larger kind of these shells the natives of the Toomat country called Nargan, and the smaller usually found in rivulets or creeks Pindiquin or Bucky.

Occasionally half-digested masses of green caterpillars and other insects were also found in the stomach of this fish.

In the Toomat country varieties of the River Cod are called by the natives Biwak, Mungi, etc.

Another fish of the family of perches is also caught in the Yass, Murrumbidgee, and other large rivers in the colony.

It is called the Perch by the colonists, and Kupe by the natives.

You could almost relate it to Murray Cod a little bit, like, um, in terms of where they live and feed and, you know, all this other stuff.

So, um, oh, we could get into it for hours, but you know, there's the, there's the sunny side of the hill and the shady side of the hill and, you know, two different times.

Uh, like, they're a mammal at the end of the day, so they, they want to be warm, so chances are they're gonna be on the sunny side of the hill.

So for context there, uh, Tyson, who is obviously part of the group as well, he's got a Murray cod one centimeter bigger than Ben and Sam-
