There were two other armies, one of which had invaded Germany from the coast of Friesland, one was carried away by a flood, narrowly escaping complete destruction.

The third had entered from the Rhine.

This was overtaken by Hermann while retreating over the long bridges which the Romans had built across the marshes of Münsterland and which were now in a state of advanced decay.

Here it found itself surrounded by seemingly insuperable dangers, being in part of its route shut up in a narrow dell into which the enemy had turned the waters of a rapid stream.

While defending their camp, the waters poured upon the soldiers, rising to their knees, and a furious tempest at the same time burst over their heads.

But then I thought about it and understood that actually it's pretty accurate.

You do need to look at the 16th century and you'll need to look at the German city of Münster in 1534.

For those of you who know your hardcore history, you know exactly what I'm going with this.

And I had cigarettes and cigars issued to me, just the same as to their own men.

I was in this hospital in Belgium for a fortnight, and was then moved into Germany, being sent to Münster, in Westphalia, with a lot of wounded Germans.

It seemed as if, in leaving Belgium, I had said goodbye to civilization in view of what happened during my imprisonment in Germany.

I very soon made acquaintance with German brutality to British prisoners of war, brutality and cowardice of which I saw constant signs in my captivity.

I did not, of course, strike until I had been struck first, but when I did hit out, I got my own back, with a lot of interest.

That is getting off the track a bit, so I will go back.

At Münster, I was taken into a disused circus, which had been turned into a hospital for prisoners, and when I got there, the doctor examined my wound.

It was all raw, but he messed about to that extent that I fainted.
