Mulry Square

For decades, art historians and art lovers alike have tried to pin down the exact location of this diner in New York.

Mulry Square, where Seventh Avenue South, Greenwich Avenue, and West Eleventh Street converge, was long considered the leading candidate since the square's sharp corner seems to match the painting's perspective perfectly.

But despite extensive research into historical maps and old photographs, the exact spot still cannot be established with certainty.

Hopper did say the painting was suggested by a restaurant on Greenwich Avenue where two streets meet, but he altered the scene to suit his own vision and enlarged the space.
