A VPN.

Mullvad specifically is the best in my opinion.

Nugs.net.

If you like jam bands or live music in general, it offers recordings and music streamed live from concerts, video and audio.

Um, if you guys have listened to this podcast for a while, it's not uncommon for us to get some positive developments, but normally there's also some drawbacks.
Henry FisherHOST

So we're gonna start with Mullvad, who has introduced multi-hop modes.
Henry FisherHOST
0:57
I've seen people a bit confused about it.
Henry FisherHOST
0:59
So multi-hop is the concept where you go through two VPN servers before you finally hit your websites.
Henry FisherHOST
1:05
It does reduce speeds, and it's something that Mullvad has, but it's a pretty common feature across VPN providers.
Henry FisherHOST
1:10
The actually new thing here is the mode in which you activate to start utilizing multi-hop.
Henry FisherHOST
1:16
So there's when needed, always, and never.
Henry FisherHOST
1:40
It looks like a location icon with some magic symbols around it.
JonahHOST

But, um, but it's an interesting service.
JonahHOST
88:01
Obscura VPN, uh, if you haven't heard of it, they're basically a VPN service that kind of partnered with Mullvad, where they have, like, a two-party system similar to, um, iCloud Private Relay, for example, where basically you pay Obscura VPN, and your device c- connects to Obscura VPN, um, but then they forward the traffic to Mullvad, and then Mullvad connects you to the website.
JonahHOST
88:27
And so your connection is actually encrypted between your device and Mullvad, and the, the, the benefit of this system is that Mullvad isn't getting your, um, payment information, and they're not getting your device's IP address because that information is being provided to Obscura.
JonahHOST
88:45
And then Obscura isn't getting information about the websites that you visit because that information is encrypted between your device and Mullvad.
JonahHOST
88:56
So it kind of just splits up who can access that data.
JonahHOST
88:59
Obscura gets, um, information about you, like your, like your payment information and your IP, and Mullvad gets information about what you're doing, um, like the websites that you're visiting.
JonahHOST
89:09
But for that to be tied together, they would basically have to, have to work together, which they're incentivized not to do.
JonahHOST
89:17
So, um, it's, it's a cool privacy technology.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:13
I don't have to reauthenticate, uh, over and over, and that's also nice if you have more devices.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:19
And I typically I tunnel through a VPN like Mullvad, um, which runs on the router itself.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:25
So I tunnel the traffic or through my own VPN where, where I do all the logging.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:29
So sometimes it looks like this.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:30
There's, um, router on the Wi-Fi.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:34
On top of that there's, uh, something like Mullvad, and on top of that it's my, my own VPN that, uh, does the, uh, out-of-band, uh, tap at home.
Costin RaiuHOST
11:44
[chuckles]
Juan Andres Guerrero-SaadeHOST

You remember when, when Snowden first started doing talks and he would show up like super fucking grainy.
Henry FisherHOST
3:33
I mean, Murphy from Easy Optouts even said, "I'm personally a little surprised the Hide My Email issue ever even made it into production." I also think that the Private Relay issue is something that has been this recurring issue with Apple that I'm quite annoyed about too, is Apple just clearly does not kind of care whatsoever about users' IP-based protection.
Henry FisherHOST
3:52
Even if Private Relay properly tunneled all of your Safari traffic, why is it only in Safari? Like why can't they enable it system-wide? And then even if you get a system-wide VPN, let's say you go with Mullvad or you go with Obscura or you go with IVPN, Windscribe, Proton, whichever VPN you pick, none of them right now in 2026 can actually guarantee that 100% of your web traffic on an iPhone actually goes through the VPN tunnel because Apple still does these random ass exclusions for your web traffic.
Henry FisherHOST
4:20
So this is something that people don't really know about or think about, and it's something that I think Apple really needs to take seriously.
Henry FisherHOST
4:26
Apple is trying to sell this idea that we deliver this much privacy and security to you, and actually I would say that a lot of it's true.
