I was almost used to Uganda as if I'm in Mukono.

It's not difficult.

When Temple Beth Tzedek and its brotherhood hosted a guest speaker from Uganda in August to talk about the Jewish communities in Africa, synagogue leaders decided that a traditional parting gift wasn't enough.

Sarah Nakintu from the village of Mukono spoke over Shabbat about challenges the Aba-Judah community in Uganda and Kenya face.

Their love for Judaism and their desire for more, more observance and ritual, more learning and more connection to world Jewry.

At the suggestion of TBT Brotherhood President Jonathan Epstein, who brought Nakintu to Buffalo, and with the support of Rabbi Sarah Reich, TBT President Rob Goldberg, and past President Harvey Sanders, TBT gifted something far more precious to Nakintu's village, a Torah to bring home.

It's who you are.

Are you learning something? Let me tell you, whether a man is in Kayunga or a man is in Pelabek, whether a brother is in Ajulu, whether you're in Mukono, whether you're in Masaja, wherever you are, it does not matter where we are.

I think we spend so much time politicking and debating and talking about who's the next president and who will come next, and less time asking ourselves, why does it take me two hours to go from Kampala to Mukono?

I like that.

Why does it take me 10 hours to go to Gulu, a place that should take me three, four hours? I think those are the conversation we sh- we should have.
