This includes everything from old stately homes to national parks, and since I grew up in County Down here in Northern Ireland, My career as a park ranger inevitably saw me posted to the Morne Mountains.
AshleyHOST
8:29
The mountains encompass a few different forests and parks that come under the jurisdiction of the National Trust, Silent Valley, Tollymore, and Ross Trevor to name a few.
AshleyHOST

But since they're all in an area that's only about 15 miles across, they're all under the remit of the team I'm a member of.

AshleyHOST

There was no hound of the Baskervilles-type creature roaming the Mourne Mountains, but no formal investigation helped us figure out what actually happened.
AshleyHOST
20:16
Of all the things that I've seen or experienced during my time working for the National Trust, the incident with the dead sheep is the one thing that still sends shivers down my spine whenever I think about it.
Irene HamiltonGUEST
22:14
And you have this magnificent view.
Irene HamiltonGUEST
22:16
You're looking at the Mountains of Mourne and you've got Carlingford Town and the bay.
Irene HamiltonGUEST
22:22
It's just stunning.
Irene HamiltonGUEST
22:23
So you can cross over then and go into Kilkeel and the Mountains of Mourne after you've had a day in Carlingford.
Irene HamiltonGUEST
22:28
So again, for me, it's a gem.
Irene HamiltonGUEST
22:30
It's an area that, you know, isn't a known place.

I went hiking for the first time at the weekend.
Sharon McCaffreyHOST
16:33
And we went up the Mourne Mountains.
Sharon McCaffreyHOST
16:35
And when we were about to start off and one of the girls said, so...
Sharon McCaffreyHOST
16:39
We're doing this mountain and that mountain.
Joanne McConvilleGUEST
14:15
What we'd agreed was that Joe would stay above me, but because I'd done so well on the first jump, Joe made the split second decision to come down in front of me to congratulate me.
Joanne McConvilleGUEST
14:28
So when I came round on the 360 degree, I didn't see the Mourne Mountains anymore.
Joanne McConvilleGUEST
14:32
I saw Joe's face.
Joanne McConvilleGUEST
14:34
The res- uh, the result of that was I lost altitude awareness.
Danny NormanHOST
59:20
Nice.
Nicola ForwoodHOST
59:21
It's close to the Mourne Mountains, which is where Slieve Donard can be found.
Nicola ForwoodHOST
59:25
So that was that.
Nicola ForwoodHOST
59:26
That was decided it was the birthday Parkrun to be.
Nicola ForwoodHOST
60:14
... "Rob, this is too soon.
Nicola ForwoodHOST
60:15
Wait." There's some Parkrun pedia for you.
Nicola ForwoodHOST

Castlewellan is in the southeast of Northern Ireland, close to the Irish Sea and lying between the Mourne Mountains and Slieve Croob or Crob? I don't actually know.
Danny NormanHOST
60:28
Croob.

You might see a photograph, hear someone talking about a mountain range or watch a film and think, "I would love to go there." Perhaps you know your local trails really well, but the whole parts of the UK you've barely explored.

The Peak District, the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands, the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland.
Christian ServiniHOST
4:16
You could spend years running in Britain and Ireland and still have an enormous amount left to discover.
Christian ServiniHOST
4:21
And then there's further afield.
Michael McKnightHOST
14:28
G- and again, great conditions, you know, um, very benign, 'cause that, that course can, if you get a bit of lying water, there's parts where it can get sticky.
Michael McKnightHOST
14:36
So look, moving to the mountains, um, just last week Danny was competing in the Mourne Sky Run event, and, uh, 'cause I know very little about it, I'm not gonna try and mansplain or bullshit, um, he's gonna tell us all about it.
Danny SquiresHOST
14:54
Yeah.
Danny SquiresHOST
14:54
Well, so yeah, basically saw this race pop up last year.
Danny SquiresHOST
15:19
I'm not sure exactly what it was, but-
Michael McKnightHOST
15:21
Dan, maybe you scared some people off.
Danny SquiresHOST
15:23
No, I doubt that because, um, as the results show, I am not s- that well versed in the Mourne mountains.
Danny SquiresHOST
15:30
But, um, yeah, still came away with a second place, so I can sort of talk, talk through the results from basically there was three races.
Bex MilnesHOST
21:32
Oh, yeah.
Bex MilnesHOST
21:33
That w- so yeah, to, to round off what was a lovely, relaxing week, I then flew over to Northern Ireland, to Belfast, and, um, had entered with Sam, um, the Mourne, uh, Mourne Mountains Ultra, which I hadn't quite appreciated [chuckles] is savage.
