Mount Timpanogos

Police stated that additional details will not be released to protect the integrity And finally, a tragedy happening on Friday.

A 19-year-old man died and multiple people were injured when lightning struck a small shelter near the summit of Mount Timpanogos, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

A group of hikers had reached the summit at about 6 a.m. when a severe thunderstorm had moved into the area.

The group took refuge inside the small structure near the peak shortly before the lightning struck the building.

Oh, man, the lightning was so bad.

A 19-year-old man died during the lightning storm while he huddled with nine other people inside of a metal structure on top of Mount Timpanogos.

The man was at the summit of the peak when scattered storm cells moved through late Thursday and early Friday.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was with others inside of a structure known as the Tin Shack when the storm struck, said Sergeant Ray Ormond, a public information officer with the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

When you think of Switzerland, the Alps, it has that feel to it, the high peak mountains that you will see from a distance, and it is stunning to see that in the summertime, even springtime with a little bit of the snow there as well.

Okay.

Our next part here is we're gonna go north of Provo, Utah.

And for someone that like national parks, there is a national park site we're gonna go to, and that's gonna be Timpanogos Cave National Monument.

This is a national monument that was basically if you think of like Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Wind Cave National Park, and so forth, this is a hike you go up, a 3.5, three-mile hike or so, you go up to the caves.

And so I asked friends in Park City, which you know where you are too, Sun Valley, like, you have mountaineers.

So I'm thinking I'm going to climb like Timpanogos, which is in Utah.

And my friends are like, no, you're not.

If you're going to climb one mountain in your entire life, you're climbing this beautiful mountain named Ama Dablam in Nepal.

We don't yet know how many of them contain ice.

Right now, it seems like the most likely ones are around Mount Timpanogos.

And then also in Little Cottonwood Canyon, there's also a number that we're pretty sure contain ice today.

And I think whenever you have ice, ice tends to be weaker than rock.

That will tend to lead to more unstable situations.

Anderson says the work the team has been doing can help them identify more of these ice-filled rock glaciers, most thought to be around Mount Timpanogos and the Little Cottonwood Canyon, where massive amounts of snow build up on steep slopes.
