Mount Monadnock

cool yeah i'm really excited uh to share i uh I was, about a year and a half ago, I was on the Fastest Known Time website poking around, looking at my geographic area.

I live in Keene, New Hampshire, which is in southwest New Hampshire, tucked near Mount Monadnock, which we have to do sometime, Amy.

It's a beautiful town out here.

Yeah, for sure.

But...

there are so many tourists there which a lot of people don't like yes they don't like i got on some routes i didn't see a lot of people when there's people on the big routes um but there are so many people that go there that they kind of got i think the trails must have gotten like eroded pretty good which i shouldn't be like this is good but it's like it's all just rock slab technical stuff it reminds me of manadnock like you getting you're getting manadnock climbs um a million Manadnock, not a million, but a bunch of different Manadnock style climbs.

So as technical as the white mountains, white mountains climbs, thousand foot climbs with beautiful coastal seas, scenic mountains everywhere, you know, lakes in there, the whole national park vibe.

Um, The trails are really good.

There is Gap Mountain in New Hampshire.

If you're ever in the southwestern corner of New Hampshire, there's a mountain called Gap Mountain near Mount Monadnock, the famous mountain that stands alone.

Gap Mountain sits under sort of under its peak.

It's very short.

Not a human habitation, not a cleared farm, not a sign of life or civilized occupation anywhere broke the unvaried expanse of wild woodland.

The hills which surround Concord, Anursak, Nashawtuck, Ball's Hill, Brister's Hill, and the rest, are of no great height, but they command fine prospects westward and northward in the direction of loftier ranges, Wachusett, Monadnock, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

The Rose Country, says a picturesque writer, has the broad effects and simple elements that compose well in the best landscape art.

Yours truly, Henry D. Thoreau Mention has already been made of Thoreau's fondness for mountains.

He possessed in a marked degree the instinct of topography, and with map and compass would make out his way unerringly through the wildest regions, and could run up the steepest places without losing breath.

He ascended such hills as Monadnock or Saddleback Mountains, says Channing, by his own path, and would lay down his map on the summit and draw a line to the point he proposed to visit below, perhaps forty miles away in the landscape, and set off bravely to make the shortcut.

The lowland people wondered to see him scaling the heights as if he had lost his way, or at his jumping over their cowyard fences, asking if he had fallen from the clouds.
