Yeah, it's quite high.

I always had to, whenever I was going there from being here, I would always have to drink a ton of water just to get my body

The mountains do get higher down there.

I mean, I think Mount Mitchell is 6,600 or something like that.

And Tennessee, the highest point is Clingman's Dome.

I do remember

him riding his bike to the top of Mount Mitchell, which is alone is a

freak.

I know he's rode his bike from Greensboro to Myrtle Beach, I think twice.

the day you're talking about when he went to Black Mountain, that was after riding the 89 miles to get there.

It was 100 miles in total he rode with the last X stretch of it up to the top of Black Mountain.

Only time I ever went to the top with him that... that five mile hike to Mount Mitchell.

I mean, damn near killed me.

While this mountain range was once as tall as the Alps or the Rockies, millions of years of erosion by wind, water, ice, and gravity have shaped them into the lower rugged peaks we know today.

Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains sub-range of North Carolina is the tallest peak in the Appalachians at 6,684 feet.

Given the mountain range's length, these mountains host a range of biomes, from temperate broadleaf forests in the south to boreal eastern Canadian forests in the north.

Conifer trees like red spruce and basolum fir dominate the north and higher elevations, and deciduous trees like beech and sugar maple spread in the south, while oak-chestnut forests intermingle between the two.

They include the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge, the Alleghenies, the Catskills, the Berkshires, the Green Mountains, the White Mountains, the Adirondacks , and dozens of smaller named ranges and sub-ranges.

The highest point, Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, rises to just over 2,037 meters, impressive by Eastern North American standards, trivial by the standards of the range's own past.

The lowest passes are barely noticeable as mountains at all, just gentle rises in the terrain that you might not even register as ridges if the map did not tell you so.

This geographic sprawl means that the Appalachians are not one landscape, but many.

Yeah, it's a long way.

And it goes from about 500 and something feet all the way up to Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet.

So there are some high peaks.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And I just, the taller, the better, right? And so the Blue Ridge Mountains are not so tall.

They're sort of, you know, rolling hills with one large peak down in North Carolina and being Mount Mitchell.

But for the most part, they're not really that impressive, but they're beautiful.

For paid camping, Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers oceanfront and soundside campgrounds, putting you steps from some of the best beaches on the entire East Coast.

Mount Mitchell State Park, home to the highest peak east of the Mississippi, provides a scenic high-elevation campground with genuinely cool summer temperatures.

For free or low-cost camping, the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests allow dispersed camping across large sections of public land in the Western Mountains.

A genuinely generous free camping option, though specific rules vary by district.

But you can get to the Pisgah Inn up above 5,000 feet in just, you know, half an hour.

Or you can go the other way toward Mount Mitchell for 30 miles and you're above 6,000 feet.

Those backcountry sites have bear hangs.
