Morecambe and Wise

Yeah

... just like Morecambe and Wise.

Well, that's what I had...

That's the image I had in my head, yeah.

who's a biographer, who's probably my favourite biographer.

He did the biography, did the one, the joint one of Morecambe and Wise.

And he also did John Lemezzio, Terry Thomas.

And he's, if you go on, he's at comedy.co.uk. He's written some amazing articles, like the, about the relationship between James Bolam and Rodney Bewes.

So, yeah, because of the Val Guest thing, I was a huge fan of Val Guest.

And so when this came out, I wasn't a massive fan of Cannon and Ball.

I was more of a Morecambe and Wise man, but I didn't mind them.

I mean, there's a lot of great stuff, you know, stuff that appealed to me.

You know, old classics, Dad's Army, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Morecambe and Wise.

You've got Dave Allen on the telly doing an hour.

You've got whatever happened to the Lightly Lads and MASH.

I'd often record them and listen to them as sort of radio plays in bed.

And I remember that what was also lovely about them was that they appealed across the ages, a lot of those.

So I would sit with my mum and dad and grandparents and we'd be watching Dad's Army or... or Morecambe and Wise, and we'd all be laughing.

And that kind of communal experience is not so common these days.

It's not as bad as I thought.

They all looked, apparently it was from the Morecambe and Wise show, 1976 Christmas special, and they all look very nice in pink dresses.

And as I remember them, because that was 76, I think that was the year they were in Cleethorpes, give or take.

So, yeah, thank you, Rick, for that.

But no, he was he was proud and he loved comedy.

My dad, he was obsessed with Les Dawson and Morecambe and Wise and all those, you know, great British comedians.

I think he was proud, definitely.

It just makes me love the world and love the way the world's getting smaller.

We're at it again.

A Morecambe and Wise return, which is another cutting copy.

When was this revealed?

There's a can that says cutting copy on it.

Yes.

So they actually

wrote their sort of first movies and their ATV series before they became Morecambe and Wise.

Yeah.

And he's got a mate called Ranji who runs a scrapyard.

And they're like a sort of Morecambe and Wise, these two old sort of comedians, you know.

And they're lovely, gentle men, both of them, and very philosophical.

They're both sort of flawed in their, you know, Ranji's faith of Islam and Charlie's sort of lapsed Catholicism.

I once did a training course where you had to talk to somebody talk to the group about anything for five minutes and you were recorded and there was a Q&A and I did the career of Morecambe and Wise who are my favourite comedians and I did the dance and I did the famous sketches and all the rest of it and the glasses and at the end of it I was exhausted and I said has anybody got any questions or comments and someone shot a hand up and went I hate Morecambe and Wise and the trainer went I was mortified.

Who doesn't like him? I've just recently, and it was wonderful, chatted to Gary Morecambe and he told me all about living with his famous dad and we had a wonderful conversation.

I never got to see them live, the one big regret, but I've got loads of books and seen the plays and everything about them.

So just being like, no, you, not everything has to be that deep.

You don't have to have sort of like, this big deep meaning behind certain bits it can just be fun and people can love it and yeah yeah exactly I think I mean I was watching a show and they said like about everything being a bit arty farty and it was like we need like a bit less arty and a little bit more farty exactly I was like yeah exactly that more farty exactly so yeah so that's my favorite kind of like festival thing to go on yeah

excuse me I mentioned earlier on about Morecambe and Wise who are my favourite comedians who makes James Hall laugh did you have comedy growing up who are your favourite comedians

yeah it's like I imagine it's the sort of usual names of where it's like you're taking sort of like little bits from everyone it's like I feel like it's parts of like comedians where you're like that joke specifically is is the one you know yeah so these are the parts of the act where you're going like i like it's great it's great but that bit whoa that's the bit like um you know like i remember sort of in my teens watching um i just watched a lot like comedy store and comedy central stuff on on um on tv just like at one in the morning couldn't sleep school the next day it doesn't matter i'm watching i'm watching the comedy store yeah and um But I, yeah, I really liked sort of, I was a big fan of like Richard Pryor and he, you know, he's wasting like his dog impression, like stuff like that.
