Montreal International Jazz Festival

Today, as an established professional musician, Andrew still pays homage to the contributions of these two artists and his greatest personal influences.

Andrew has performed and studied with notable artists including Esperanza Spalding, Barry Harris, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Larnell Lewis, Terry Lynn Carrington, Pat LaBarbera, and Hilario Durant, just to name a few, and played at major festivals such as the Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival,

among many others.

an award-winning trumpeter, composer, educator, and recent master's graduate of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, Andrew is a very well-respected Canadian musician.

Did an incredible list.

The United Nations, Carnegie Hall, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

I mean, these are the absolute pinnacles of live performance.

They are.

There's a concert that's not in this collection that I wanted to ask about, Celine.

You said a show that was really special for you was a performance that Oscar did at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2004 when he performed with Oliver Jones, who we sadly just lost.

Why does that concert stick out to you?

I think that concert in Montreal... for me personally there, I find something new in it every time I watch, every time I watch it.

Yeah, I mean, I agree with you.

I really love leaving music open until you get somebody like Muse headlining the Montreal Jazz Festival, and then that pisses me off.

I get that, yeah.

Not that I don't like Muse.

They're just supposed to be headlining the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Yeah, they're sad.

So you have a new album that's coming out very soon called Axis.

Angine de Poitrine released their first album in 2024 and hit meteoric success in early 2026 after an appearance on the KEXP YouTube channel went viral.

They won the Global Breakthrough Award from Billboard in June, and they recently made headlines for drawing the largest crowd Montreal Jazz Festival has seen since Stevie Wonder in 2009, which was close to 200,000 attendees.

And earlier this week, they made their late-night TV debut on Jimmy Fallon.

I'll drop links in the show notes to some of these performances.

And, you know, the incredible jazz scene in Montreal.

Yeah, we're about to embark on another Montreal Jazz Festival, which I think is one of, if not the largest, one of the largest jazz festivals in the world.

You just had Stacey Kent, I think she'll be here.

But I mean, of course, it draws people from all over the world, but some of the acts are just...

The tour began on May 11, 2008, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was extended until late 2010.

The schedule of the first leg in mid-2008 encompassed Canada and Europe, including performances at the Big Chill, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and on the Pyramid Stage at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival on June 29, 2008.

His performance in Glastonbury was hailed by many as the highlight of the festival and his performance of Hallelujah as the son received a rapturous reception and a lengthy ovation from a packed pyramid stage field.

He also played two shows in London's O2 Arena.
