Local communities are mostly saying, "Thanks, but no thanks." Monterey Park on the east side of LA County, it's become the first city in the US to ban data centers.

That's been entirely due to the efforts of a group of residents called No Data Center Monterey Park.

KCRW's Brandon Reynolds has the story.

Last December, Monterey Park residents started organizing against a proposed two hundred and eighteen thousand square foot data center.

While the city was in favor of the project because of the five million dollars in tax revenue it was supposed to bring in each year, residents were more concerned about would it be taking out, a lot of water for one and enough electricity to power forty thousand homes.

That's like twice the entire city of Monterey Park per year.

It's just coming from this one site.
