Monster

All right.

R.E.M., Monster.

Yep.

Bon Jovi.

I can be your friend.

The album was Monster, released in 1994.

You are listening to Spotlight, and the group is REM.

I'm Vanessa, along with you on today's musical journey.

And then there's the tour film.

Some of my favourite films growing up were films like REM's Monster and Radiohead's Meeting People Are Easy.

They are more tour films.

Now, the Radiohead one, you do get some discussion from the band and it's edited in a way to sort of represent the madness one has on tour.

And...

But really, you don't really learn much at all.

And the REM Monster one is just a tour film.

Songs, sort of incidental clips of the bands behind stage, but no real insight.

In 1994, R.E.M. released What's the Frequency Kenneth.

This guitar track was the lead single for the distortion-heavy album Monster.

The song's cryptic title and lyrics were inspired by the bizarre 1986 incident in which CBS News anchor Dan Rather was assaulted on a New York sidewalk by a man repeating the phrase, What's the Frequency Kenneth? It hit number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, hit number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs and Mainstream Rock charts.

In 2011, Bon Iver released Holocene.
