Monster

Hello.

Uh, on last week's episode, we watched Patty Jenkins' Monster, um, the story of an Am- America's first female serial killer.

On this week's episode-

That we know of.

She's one of the most fascinating directors working because her careers just never really fit neatly into one box.

Patty Jenkins made her feature directing debut with Monster, the harrowing 2003 film about serial killer Eileen Wuornos, with Charlize Theron delivering an Oscar-winning performance.

Then she moved into television, directing episodes of shows such as Arrested Development, Entourage, and The Killing, before taking on a project that would change the trajectory of her career and the superhero genre itself.

Her 2017 film Wonder Woman was a phenomenon, a massive worldwide hit, a landmark for female filmmakers, and one of the most beloved superhero movies of its era.

I'm still trying to make these movies.

So, yeah, it's kind of compulsive.

And then with Monster, you know, nowadays that seems like a no-brainer because we're in the, you know, the true crime renaissance, you know, or we could say saturation at this point between the documentaries and the podcast and the fictionalizations.

But at the time, that was pretty unusual.

Nebraska.

Patty Jenkins had done Monster, and, you know, I admire her work, and just thought that would be a huge get to have her be a part of it.

And then...

The Charlize Theron monster.

So I can tell this story now.

We pitched...

The Signancy Monster, it was right when they did the Land of the Lost feature.

And they were going to do a whole cinematic universe and then Land of the Lost underperformed.

Never heard it in my life before, but you know what I did do? And this is something you need to do.

If you're going to watch that TV show, you need to go and watch the Charlize Theron movie from 2004 called Monster.

Yeah.

Because apparently coming up somewhere in the next couple of episodes, if you're just starting watching it, is a reference to the 1980s.

And it features Charlize Theron's character.

And everyone's confused about where that came from.

So what you need to do is watch the movie Monster.

But Monster with that,

And this is in Massachusetts.

So they did the series Monster.

Now, they've done Jeffrey Dahmer, Melendez Brothers.

I'm trying to think who else.

right.

Patty

wrote Monster.

She called the movie Monster because her upbringing and walking the streets in Florida on those highways, and she did have an experience where a serial killer tried to.

Yeah, on this week's episode, we will be discussing the 2003 film about serial killer Eileen Wuornos from writer-director Patty Jenkins.

Monster.

The film is called Monster.

Good luck Google searching that or YouTube searching that for clips because it's impossible.

But before we get into that conversation, Taya, can you please dock our ship into Situation

I found that relationship thing kind of cool.

So knowing what I know about Eileen Wuornos, the serial killer.

I thought, what an interesting thing to follow some of these threads then with this film, Monster.

That was A.

A, The Shipping News, B, Monster, C, In the Cut, or D, Mona Lisa Smile.

[buzzer] Mona Lisa Smiles.

Nope.

Nope.

Oh, shit.

Monster.

Oh, I should have known that.
