Today on the newscast, we speak with Mongabay staff writer, Amy Gabay, covering indigenous affairs.

Gabay joins me to speak about her recent reporting trip to the Peruvian Amazon, where she connected with the Matses indigenous people.

Until 1969, this community lived in voluntary isolation, officially deciding to make contact with a group of evangelical missionaries, the reasons for which will be discussed later in this episode.

Forest watchers point out that the decline has coincided with tightened regulation and enforcement since President Lula came back into power, with a 2030 pledge to end illegal deforestation.

Environment news website Mongabay reports that the deforestation trend is confirmed by independent forest monitoring services, and that clearance rates in the Cerrado tropical savanna biome have also dropped to the lowest levels in five years, down 2.8% on the previous period.

New Zealand's Modern Slavery Bill has cleared many of the hurdles required for it to pass into law, which would require larger companies to report on forced labor in supply chains, as is now required in many other legislations.

The bill's backers want to see it on the statute book before elections in November.
