The little girl was being treated at Monash Children's Hospital for a rare life-threatening illness that can cause kidney and brain damage, triggered by a toxin-producing bacteria commonly found in animals like cows.

It's believed she was exposed during a visit to a petting zoo, with another child also hospitalized after attending a birthday party at the same venue.

Victoria's Health Department launched an investigation into the outbreak last month.
